ARRESTED FOR MURDER.»
Hall’s Preliminary Examination will
Result in His Discharge.
In his. statement tothe Coroner's . .
jury at French Corral yesterday, Thos.
Hall, who shot and killed Ah Lum, a
Chinese sluice robber, Thursday night,
said that their diggings had been
‘robbed on two previous occasions and .
he arranged with his partner to watch
the sluices. It was Hall’s turn Tharsday night. He took up-a position at
the head of the sluices and at about 10
o'clock he heard footsteps approaching. Presently he saw the form of a
mai and when sixty feet from him the
fellow stopped and began to rob the
slaices. Hall raised his shotgun and}
fired once. Soon after he heard a.
groaning sound and was satisfied that
he had bit him, but did not know then
whether it was a white man or a Chinaman. After reloading his gun Halt
Jooked arvuud to see if there was another robber in the diggings.
walked up to where ihe robber fell and
found a dead Chinaman, °
Hall said he vousidered bis life and
property was in danger and that he did
the shooting for those reasons. :
The Chinaman had some sort of dark
lantern and used a silver spoon to dip
out the amslgam. Ah Lum was 39
years of-age and was known all along
the Ridge. For the past three months
he had lived in French Corral but did
no work. ‘Lhe post mortem examination made by Dr. Miller of North San
Juan showed that buckshot had penetrated the skull in several places.
The coroner’s jury was composed of
PD: Miller, Eli Kirkwood, W.G. Fenton,
W. H. Allen, M. B. Dumford, W.-S.
Kirkwood, George H. Alpers, J. Kirkwood, M. J. O'Connor. Their verdict
was that Ah Lum came to. his death
from gunshot wounds inflicted by
Thomas Hall while in defense ot his
life and property.
Mr. Hall’s action is endorsed by all
the people of French Corral. There is
no truth in the statement that he did
not report the case to the proper authorities. “He reported it immediately
‘to his partner. ‘
Coroner Daniels, Sheriff Getchell,
Deputy Sheriff Waters and District
Attorney Power, who went over to investigate the case, did riot retura till
noon today. They say that on thedead
Chinaman’s person were found a 38ealiber revolver fully loaded, a watch
and chain, a purse containing some
money, three packages of gold dust,
two gunny sacks and a flour sack, a
gold pan, a hook for scraping gravel
from between the rocks, an 18-inch
cbisel like a burgiar’s jimmy, a can
made into a dark lantern and-a “silver
spoon” for taking amalgam from between the blocks: :
Hall was arrested yesterday after the
coroner’s inquest on complaint of Deputy. Sheriff Sam McCullough, who
made a formal charge of murder. He
was released on his own recognizance.

Prisoner Moore is rapidly recuperating from the demoralizing effects of
the hardships he endured during the _
three weeke and four days that intervened between the morning he shot .
down Policeman Kilroy and the day
that he surrendered to Sheriff. Veale.
A+ good ‘bed: and. plenty of food, us

his formand bracing up his nerves. —
The Transoniet has a “pointer” that
Moore’s defense will not be insanity,
as is generally anticipated, but that he
will endeayor to show that his life was
in jeopardy when he fired the fatal
shots. He will try to produce testi‘mony to the effect that Kilroy threatened to kill him ahd then made an unprovoked and violent assault upon him.
In view of what Bob Gates says he saw,
this may prove a difficult task, for
Gates declares that Kilroy seemed to
simply have ~ placed his hands on
Moore’s shoulders when the fusilade began.
Moore’s father is expected here

son’s ‘mining claim on Little Deer

Moore tells how he had a narrow. escape one day from capture by Sheriff

He did not want to have a gun-fight

“Murderer Moore, a few days ago,
was represented to be a picturesque
and typical desperado who would certainly mever be captured alive, but
would ‘die with his boots on,’ working a
