. The largest day’s business in the hiatory of the prane industry of the State
of Osliforaia was done by the . Qali+
fornia Cured Fruit Association last
Tuesday at San Jose, when 20,000,000.
Pounde of fruit were sold. ‘This isa
total of 30,000,000 pounds at the 2-cent
basis.. Orders came in yesterday in
million-pound lots, and when business closed for the day it was thought
that there. were still some orders. in
the:mail. The price went back to the
8-cent basis that evening, it being the
close of the fifteen-day period. The
Board of Directors ‘at the “meeting,
however, removed the one-cent a ponrd
differential in favor of exporters. This
puts the exporter and the American
dealer on the same basis, that of three
cents. rage :

‘that prairie ‘Metropolis, but the opera,
atrical company, and ‘the Republiceng
had leased the only other available
hall. On the outside of the town, at a
place called San Pedro-Springs Norris
& Rowe’s Big Trained Animal shows
was wintering, and it possessed among
other things a large training barn. ‘The
Democrats hired the barn for the night
from Norris & Rowe, filled it with’ circus seats, lit the gasolina lamps, and.
‘atarted the meeting. . The Chairman
mounted an elephant tub and solemnly
‘announced that they had gathered to
dedicate a new temple of liberty and
justice. Thén Governor Hogg arose.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” said he.
“Roar-r-r-r,” went the elephant.
“In this eventfal campaign,” continaed Governor Hogg, whereupon the
monkeys chattered aud the dogs
growled. :
“I come to speak to you—”
The elephant trumpeted again with
majestic noise.

The sixty odd ponies whinnered and
kicked the floor. :
“—-our great and glorious leader, the
peerless statesman, and the matchless
orator, William J. Bryan—”
At that moment ali the animals in
the barn joined in a tremendous chorus.
A shiver of fear ran through the audience.

remarked Governor Hogg, after the
noise had subsided, “even the wild
beasts lift their voices in a tumult of
appreciative joy.”
