Of Happenings of Interest in and Around This Section. W. H. Sandow, who was seriously injured in. the Sierra Queen mine about three weeks ago, was able to be out on-the street today for the first time since the accident. , J. The remains of the late Mrs, Lena Soule, who passed away at Hunts Hill Wednesday from heart disease, were this moroing shipped to San Francisco for interment. The special series of stamps to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis will be issued by the postoffice department beginning April 21st, bat they will not be placed on sale in any postoffice in the United States until April 80th, 1904, and may be sold from that time until December let, 1904, at which time all unsold stamps will be called in by the Department. The denominations and subjecte of theee stamps are as followe: One cent, green; subject, Robert Livingstone, United States Minister to France, who conducted the negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase. Two-cent, red; Thomas Jefferson, President, of the United States at the time of the purchase. Three-cent, purple; James Monroe, Special Ambassador to France in the matter of the purchase, who with Livingstone, closed the negotiations. © Five-cent, blue; William McKinley, who as President of the United States, approved the acts of Congress officially connecting the United States government with the commemorative exposition. Ten-cent, brown; United States map showing the territory of the purchase. This series of stamps will not be issued fn book form. Somewhal Beller. Mrs. William 8. That is to say, that although her condition is critical she bas rallied to such an extent that her attending physicians now feel greatly encouraged as to her probable recovery. Worlds Fair Noles A clock 300 years old and construct ed entirely of wood will be shown at the World’s Fair. Nine cars of exhibits from the Republic of Mexico have already arrived arrived at 8t. Louis where the World’s Fair commissioners preceded them. The largest electrical switchboard in tbe world, from which will be operated the enormous power for the Exposition, will be in the Palace of Machinery at St. Louis. Oregon’s State building at the World’s Fair isa reproduction of old Fort Clatsop, a log structure built from Oregon timber and adjoined by a large corral formed by upright cedar posts. Steam was turned into the cylinders of the big Allis Chalmers engine at the World’s Fair for the first time a few days ago and the largest steam engine fu the world wag eet in: motion. Its speed is seventy-five revolutions a minute and its generating force 5,000 horse power. Idaho apples, kept during the winter in cold storage, are the star products of that State’s frait offerings in the Palace of Horticulture at the World’s Fair. Idaho fruit claim that they have Ben Davis apples as firm as winesaps and possessing a flavor that is unknown’to the same variety raised in the East. A brilliant polo season has been planned as. one of the World’s Fair attractiona. The leading polo teams of England and America will participate. Tbe polo contests will ocear on the Stadium, the program to be arranged by the National Polo Association of Americe. Quarantined. . {ed in the States of Idaho and Uteb. ‘The quarantine is to remain in effect Beno, Nev.,” April 28.—Governor Sparkes yesterday issued a proclamation declaring @ quarantine on all ‘sheep now being held, herded or rangfor ninety days, and is caused -by the fact that the sheep of the States now under the ban are said to be affected with scab and other diseases that are contagious and a menace to the herds of this State. Sar Laks, Utah, April 28th.—A private dispatch received in this city to day states that the Executive Board of the United Mine Workers of America ‘Met in Indianapolis yesterday and decided to call off the coal strike in Dietrict No. 15.
