}} A-New) England firm-has just completed a machine capable of counting
and binding in packs 500,000. postal
cards in ten hours. The postal.cards
are printed and cut by another machine, but this one counts them and.
makes them into packs of twenty-five
each:The most ingenious parts of the
machine are the fingers and thumbs,
row strip of paper around each pack.
The paper is pulled off the reel by two
long, slender fingers ‘that come up’
itself, into the box of mucilage and
daubs the end of another finger, which
in turn applies the mucilage to the
narrow strip of paper at just. the right
spot. The strip is wrapped about the
pack of cards,.a thumb, comes up and
presses the mucilage part down hard,
and the thing is done,

THE IGUANA.
A Snake Story That Comes from the Sunny
‘ South,
In South America, says the St. Louis
Globe-Democrat, snakes are very numerous; but their enemies are numerous:
Perhaps the most notable of these
The iguana is no
mean adversary, as may be judged from
often ¢ome off with a broken leg. The
lizard does not wait for the snake te
take the offensive, but goes swiftly in
‘pursuit, and being very rapid in its
motions, rarely has any difficulty in
overtaking its ‘victim,.which it dispatches with blows from its powerful
tail. 1 remember a funny experience
Uhad with one of these lizards which
clearly illustrates its hatred for snakes.
T-was riding with a friend in search of
cattle,, My lasso was attached to the
saddle and. the end trailed along the
ground behind me. A big iguana Jay
in the sun apparently asleep, It paid
no attention to my horse as it passed, . j
but the next instant it raised its head
nd fixed its attention on the twenty
eet of lasso slowly trailing by, Sudin it rushed after. the rope and
dealt it a succession of violent blows
with its tail. When the whole of the
lasso, several yards of which had been
pounded in vain, had been dragged by,
the lizard with uplifted head continued
to gaze after it with evident astonishment. Never before had such s wonderful snake crossed its path.

Splitting Cabbage Stems. .
A des¢ription is given’ of a: method
for arresting the growth of cabbage
heads neatly mature, and thereby preventing their cracking. This is performed by cutting’ the cabbage stem
half or two-thirds across with a sharp
pruning knife and then extending the
cut either up or. down for.a.short, distance. If the cabbage does not bend
over by. its own weight and thus
widen the split, a splinter of -wood
should be inserted to keep the, cut surfaces apart. By this means the further
growth of the-heads is arrested, and
yet sufficient sap reaches them to keep
ther fresh until wanted for use.
