Bryan Dinasieainied:
It is understood that Mr. Bryan's re.
cent tour through the south was a
great disappointment to him and his
friends. He found evidence that the
free silver cause is waning in that section as well as in the west and it is
whispered that the question of relegabe.
ting it to be the background is very seriously considered both by Bryan and
the leaders of his party in Washington.
The fact. that chairman Jones studiously omitted to mention silver in his recent appeal to the people of the country and that reports from all sections
show that the proposition is losing
ground very rapidly strengthens the
belief that the effort is made to bring
other issues to the front to take the
place in part, at least of the silver shibboleth—_ Humboldt Standard.

An Unsightly Sight.
A few years ago there was a building

by fire. The citizens in that part of

They gave the city a deed to the place
with the understanding that no building should be placed on it, and to be
used as a part of Nevada street, stone
wall put up, etc. Nothing has been
done to it in any away and it is about
one of the most unsightly sights in the
town. It looks like the very old
scratch. The City Dads should get a
move on and fix it before the Grand

Hubbard Acquitted.
A dispatch to the Transonter fromDownieville this morning says that the _
jury in the case of the People vs. Hub-bard, charged with murder, returned a
verdict of not guilty at 1 o’clock this
murning. The testimony introduced
at the trial showed that the Hooley:
brothers had trouble among themselves. on December 27, 1896, at Sierra
Valley. Henry Hooley went after defendant to help him. Defendant took
his rifle and went, back with Henry
Hooley and from bis house, through a
window, shot Fred Hooley, aged 17
years, the latter being outside. Defendant set up a plea of self defense,
stating that the deceased had a rifle at
the time and was preparing to shoot at
him.
Public opinion was in Hubbard’s fa. vor and $200 was raised by subscription
to procure counsel for him. When the
verdict was announced the spectators
in the courtroom applauded. There
was an affecting scene between the defendant and his wife and three children.
District Attorney Wehe and F. D.
Soward conducted the prosecation,and
J.B. Irish and Judge Gale appeared
for the defendant.
