These discouragers of the dominion of evil style themselves the False Face society, says the New York Herald. They enjoy a direct behest from the great ruler, Rawen Niyoh, whom they . also name Taronyawagon, or Holder of When the inanimate nmiask of an enduring diabolism lays hold of a copper colored son of the Grand river reserve, the good men of the tribe that invests Ontario with romance go forth and labor until the lost spirit shall cease from troubling and the victim be at rest. At such. times the members of the soclety appear, marching in the stolid dignity of the “Indian file,” each wearing"a mask and carrying a turtle rattle. They stir the hearth ashes in the house of the invalid, execute mystic mdauipulations, sprinkle ashes over the sick one’s head and finally lead “him around in the False Face dance, which concludes the ceremonies. The oppression of And so that formerly characterized the False ‘ To a: very large extent the secrecy Faces no longer exists. Many if not all of the members are known, but they continue to hold meetings from which nonmembers are excluded, The fiction is maintained of haying two. women to act as mediums of communication between the society and. outsiders, but these women are only the cooks of the feast. “The Iroquois medicine man’s mask is rare and valuable. One specimen Is the property of Mr. David Boyle of To‘by We-hwa-gek-ti (Carrying News on His Back), who fs still living on the re‘serve at Brantford. He is a nephew of :. Hy-joong-kwas (He Tears Everything), ‘who has been for many years chief medicine man and who Wore this mask on all ceremonial occasions in connection with the False Face society, as well as at feast mask dances in the’ ". long house. As to the masks themselves, the be. lief that each is the abode of a spirit has resulted in the creation of a myth to account for its origin in a supernatural sense. The following is the myth f of A-k’-on-wa-rah, the mask of Hyjoong-k was: it ¢ After the making of. the world atic its people by Rawen Niyob he Seft it for a time. but when he returned he war one day walking through an open place, following the sun, overlooking it, and I am-stronger than you are.” “Show me how you can prove this,” demanded Rawen Niyoh. The False Face suggested that they retire to a valley not far from two high mountains. The False Face ordered one of the mountains to come nearer, and it moved close to them. Rawen Niyoh was very much surprised at the result. : Niyoh then said: “You have power, I see, but of what use is it to you? What good can you do with it?” To this the Mask replied: “I use it to make people well when they are sick. Now I would like to know what power you have.” j Ntyoh said, “Do you want to see my power?” The Mask said he did. “Very well, then,” answered Niyoh. “TI will show you my power, for I made the world.” The Mask then said, ‘Make the other mountain come closer up to us,’ Cr Niyoh’s suggestion that the two should fuce about as before they did so, and Niyoh told the mountain to come close up to the first mountain, which it did. Niyoh slipped from between the mountains, but the Mask, turning round quickly to see what had happened, brought his nose up with great force against the face of the mountain. which stood behind him like a big wall, and the pain made him put out his tongue. F : “Now,” said Niyoh, “you see I have also great power, and to make you remember this your nose will always remain crooked and your tongue will always hang out,” The False Face then knew that Ni_-Lyoh had more!power than he had, and ever since the only sound he can utter is a tremuloys and somewhat subdued “Hoh-o-0-0, hoh-6-0-0-0.”” Each was satisfied with the exhibition of power on the part of the other, and Rawen Niyob said, “I think it would not be well for you to be seen here by the people who are coming to this place, because you are so ugly, for everybody would follow you. to -Iook at you.” A-k’-on-wa-rah (the False Face) agreed to this on condition that he should be allowed to claim the new people as bis grandchildren, and they were to call him grandfather. “I will help you all I can,” said he, “to drive away sickness from among the new people. and I am able to proRawen Niyob replied: “I am sure you have much power to help the people, and you must keep this power as long as they live. We will make a bargain. They shall be your grandchildren and you their grandfather. They must observe the dance—the False Face dance —at the long house forever. Now. we make this bargain, which shall last as long as you and I and the people and the world shall last.” ; Rawen Niyoh and A-k’-on-wa-tah . then geparated, the former saying, “I am going toward the setting sun,” and the FalseFace saying, “I go where the sun rises.” ! It will be seen from this story that even Rawen Niyoh is not supreme. His’ power is equaled by that of A-k’-on-wa-! rah, and both are -able to transport! themselves to any part of the world at! : pleasure. Hy-joong-kwas being too old to act in his official capacity, he was induced with great difficulty to part with his: mask. Believing the mask to be the abode of a veritable spirit, it was nee, essary to placate that spirit fto-atone fer the insult of giving the mask to somebody else. Besides, Hy-joongkwas and the mask had been so long’ in communion that nea trcssfer, even for a consideration, was no ordinary business transaction. He went through the ceremony of burning tobacco in the stove and said: “We shall not be very far apart, and I will often think of you and will often burn some.tobacco for you.” On concluding this touching little address be threw all that was left of his bandful of tobacco into the fire, took tbe mask from the back of the chair and after once more stroking its .hair handed it to Mr. Boyle with a request } that he would rub its face with ofl once or twice a year, as it bad been accustomed to such attention ever since Hyjoong-kwas owned it and would be pleased to be remembered in this way!
