_ Sia vastly exceed those of Rome and Macedon.
_ AFTER EASTER REFLECTIONS
LL, the civilized nations are engaged in making aggressions on the_uncivilized or partially civilized nations.
_ _ Russia is'invading China, Japan is invading Corea,
Great Britain is invading Thibet in Asia .and Somaliland in
Africa, Germany is invading West Africa, the Belgians are
invading the Congo country and France is invading Morocco.
All the invading nations protess the Christian faith, and pro_fess a desire for peace. Yet their preparations for war excel
in magnitude even the wildest imaginings of the barbarian
conquerors ef:ancient history. Their disposition to seize
territories and place the inhabitants under subjection is as
pronounced as it was in the days of Caesar and Semirrmis,
In extent and power the empires of Great Britain snd RusBy comparison with Russia’s army the fabled host of Xerxes woutd
appear insignificant. ‘:
What humbugs we Christians are to be sure, comments
the Oakland Tribune. How false are our practices to our
professions and the teachings of our faith! Even in our own
country we are beginning to feelthe itch for conquest that
has always fevered the blood of the Aryans. On one pretext
or another we are laying hands on outlying territories and
casting longing eyes on the possessions of our neighbors. In
every church in Christendom there was read Sunday the imperishable code given to Moses, but the statutes appear to
have no meaning for Christian peoples collectively. We
continue to kill, to steal and to ‘covet the possessions of our
neighbors, and it is asserted, even by the clergy, that the
teachings of the Christian faith have no application to the
governmental policy of nations.
On each Easter morning for nineteen hundred years
Christianity has sung the song of peace and good will among
men, and for nineteen hundred years the Christian hands
have spoiled the Egyptian of his lands and property. Ever
since Constantine linked the cross with the sword, fashioning
the hilt of the instrument of blood and rapine to the shape of
that instrument of torture on whlch the Savior was crucified,
the Christian world has waded in slaughter. The emblem of
peace and love has been inscribed on the banner of conguest.
‘In this sign we conquér.” Was it for this that Jesus died
on Calvary? That the cross should be taken for the pattern
of the handle of the sword is an awful satire on the history
of Christianity. It was written nineteen hundred years ago
that “Christ hath indeed risen, and hath appeared to Simon.”
from a world given over to bloodshed. How long, oh Lord,
are thy saints to inscribe the device of the Supreme expiation on their shields as they go forth to battle to extend
their trade.and enlarge their dominions?

The following correspondence written by a lady who for many years
made Nevada City her home, but who

to Washington and secured a home
under the co-operative plan, will be
perused with avidity, as it depicts life
and conditions as lived by people in

Epiton Nevapa, Crry Transoret :—
Thinking perhaps some of my old
friends would like to know where we
are living and know something of the
©-Qntry and the people among which
we live, I will try and tell you all Ican:
We came to Home, Washington, from
Nevada Oity eighteen months ago, and
really it seems as if years have come
and gone since that time has passed.
We bought half an acre of ground
here, joining the Home Association,
which will in time be tarned over to
the Association. It wasa perfect wilderness. We first built a small cottage, then cleared the land and, as I
bad nothing to do but “be lonely,” I
went oat and helped my busband do
all the clearing, even to making the
street in front of the house. Now there.
are no stumps, nor trees, nor anything
else to interfere with the plow in cultivation. We have a small lawn in front
of the house and a small orchard back;
also a garden and all kinde of small
fruit. We have just finished painting
the inside of the house and are beginnipg to feel at home. I have named
our place Madrone Cottage, there being a beautiful madrone tree at the
south window, and the only tree left
know bow beantifnl it is when the berties are red. We have one of the fineet
to see Puget So
Still farther down is Mount Ranier
which is covered with snow all the year
round. There is no need for me to tell
how beautifal it is living on the water. We have no communication from
Tacoma, only by water, There is one

on them and blue dresting jackets did
not become him very .well, as his long
grey beard and big feet were too conspicuous,
I cannot tell much aboat the. principles of the people, for I do not thoroughly understand them myself yet.
One cannot find more intelligent, refloed people any where—generous and
kind to a fanlt, The great drawback
is no industry of any kind here. Oné
and all must go out in the world to
earn a living if they have not a bank
account.
The climate is very much the same
in the winter as in Nevada City, but
the summer ie much cooler. We do
not have the warm sunshine that you
do. The alders and hazel trees were
tasseled out in February and so were
the pussy willows, The violets have
bloomed almost all winter and one

There is really no question as to the advisability of es—. ina asked or compelled to labor on
tablishing and maintaining a course of this character. Coeducation as practiced in most of the universities is a good
deal of a farce. The women are admitted, it is true, as freely
as the men, but they are admitted to the courses especially
for men and designed for men. Hardly a single change has
been in the curriculum of the college since women were adnufitted. Those institutions are called co-educational in which
women are allowed to take men’s courses, while truly co-educational ones would be those in which courses for the women
are provided wnich will be equivalent to those supplied for
the men, At the University of California instruction is furnished in a dozen different technical branches for men and
only one for women—teaching. The most universal of all
occupations for women, the science of the home, is completely
neglected. That the University of Chicago*has been aroused
to the im nce of this one is a good sign and one full of
promise for the future.
