most cosmopolitan gathering that ever assembled there, and
people in humble walks of life vied with society people in
showing their great appreciation of the popular couple and
regret was freely expressed at their departure from our
midst. No class of people, however, was more interested in
the big reception than was the horny-handed miners of our
community, and all of them that possibly could attend were
there, It is evident that no mining superintendent in Nevada county was ever held in such high esteem by the miners
of this section as is Mr. Zeitler.
The assemblage-was called to order by Fred Searls,
Esq., who presided as chairman and made some very appropriate opening remarks which were enthusiastically received.
The following program was then rendered, all of the numbers being so liberally applauded that they were obliged to
respond to an encore:
Male quartette, Messrs. Crase, Prisk, Nicholas and
Prisk of Grass Valley; vocal solo, Miss Elsie Arbogast; vocal duet, Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Prisk; vocal solo, Miss Lyda
Mainhart; “Parting Song” by ladies’ trio, consisting of Mesdames H. C. Schroeder, F. L. Arbogast and Miss Elsie Arbogast.
Rev. J. Sims then stepped forward and in eloquent language he told of the many commendable enterprises which
Mr. Zeitler had engaged in during his long residence in Nevada City and of the great esteem in which the mining superintendeut and his talented wife had been held by our
people. These complimentary remarks were indorsed by the
entire audience who responded with great applause. Mr.
and Mrs. Zeitler were seated in the south end. of the hall
under a beautifully arranged canopy of flowers and bunting.
Seated there they heard the complimentary words of Dr.
Sims who made a pretty presentation speech on behalf of the
miners of the Champion mine and presented them with a
beautiful solid silver service of seven pieces. The service is
valued at $240, and the entire amount was raised among the
miners. Mr. Zeitler’responded to the call made on him for
a speech and in a few well chosen words he expressed his
sincere appreciation for great honor conferred upon them by
the people of Nevada City. He thanked the miners for their
token of esteem and stated that it was with regrets that he
and his wife were to leave this city for the metropolis, but
he hoped to spend much of his time here. At the conclusion
of his remarks Mr. Zeitler was given three cheers by the
audience, and this was followed by three more for his wife.
Dancing was then engaged in until midnight, Wild’s
orchestra furnishing the music.
A large number of people were present from Grass Valley at the reception. It was a great affair.
