IS WELL MERITED
Railroad Company held their annual meeting yesterday at Grass Valley, at which considerable important
business was transacted. A board of directors was
elected, and several changes were made in the officers of the
company. The most important change, perhaps, was the
election of John Glasson to be superintendent and treasurer
of the company. The following stockholders were elected
to constitute the new board of directors, each receiving 2234
votes: Mrs. S. A. Kidder, Peter Johnson, C. P. Loughridge,
Samuel Granger, John Glasson, D. E. Morgan and F. G.
Beatty. The directors organized by electing Mrs. Kidder,
president; Peter Johnson vice president and auditor; C. P.
Loughridge, general manager and chief engineer, John
Glasson, superintendent and treasurer; F. G, Beatty, secretary and general freight and passenger agent. The same
Station agents were re-appointed as are serving at present.
The report of the president was very interesting and
gratifying and showed that the business of the company has
been decidedly satisfactory during the past year. The gross
earnings for the past year was $129,086.27, being an increase
over the previous year of $15,136.37. The operating expenses
for the year was $78,843.53, an increase of $8,300.85 over the
total expense of the year previous. In addition to the fixed
charge of $16,380 on bonded debt, there was paid from income
accounts, bills payable, interest and commission, $2050.79.
The bonded debt was reduced $4000 during the year. The
excess income over all expenses, as shown by the Secretary
and Auditor’s detailed report, amounted to $13,735.35. From
this surplus dividend No. 5 was paid about one month ago.
A dividend (No. 4) of $5 per share was also paid on the first
of last December,
The recent experiment of the company in using oil for
fuel on one of its engines has been attended with such good
results that another engine has been equipped with an oil
burner. The company’s freight business has increased to
such proportions as to necessitate the building of several
new box cars at once. During the ensuing year the company
intend to equip the entire roadbed with steel rails and new
fittings and has other important improvements contemplated
which will be publicly announced when the proper time ares Directors of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge

Fiend’s Arrest
This afternoon the Board
of Supervisors offered a reward of Five Hundred Dollars for the arrest and conviction of the murderer, or
murderers, of William Brown.
Last night a horrible murder was
committed in this city by some per
sop, or persons, as yet unknown, and
as result William Brown, a highly respected resident, lies cold in death,
with bis head almost chopped to
pleces.
It ia presumed that the awful deed
was perpetrated about nine o’clock,
and the apparent object was robbery,
as three watches are missing, including one which the murdered man carried. Mr. Brown left Mrs. D. A
Dailey’s house,on Park Avenue,a little
after eight o’clock for his home nearby
He bade the lady, who is his niece,
good night, and that was the last his
felatives saw of him until about ten
o’clock when Henry Richards and his
daughter, who reside in the same
house with Brown, came home. Mr.
Richards and his daughter, Mamie,
beard 8 man groaning as they entered the house. They went to the
kitchen and there a terrible spectacle
met their eyes, Near the stove they
found Brown lying in a pool of blood
in an unconscious condition on the
floor. The room was bespattered with
blood and the evidences of a desperate struggle were plainly to be
seen Further investigation showed
that the house had been ransacked.
The contents of drawers and lockers
were ecattered around, showing that
a burried search had been made for rives for doing so.
This is certainly a magnificent showing and not only denotes the past year to have been one of increased prosperity
for the company, but bespeaks fine management and execu-.
tive ability on the part of the officers who served so efficiently .

unfortunate man was Mise Richards,
who preceded her father into the

down are capable, trustworthy and energetic people and are
among Nevada county’s most popular and esteemed citizens,
so taking into consideration the exceedingly prosperous outlook for the ensuing year, it goes without saying that next
year’s report will show a far greater increase in volume of
business and corresponding profit to stockholders, notwith
Standiny the fact that the past year has been the most prosperous yet in the history of the road. The people of Nevada county and vicinity will feel highly pleased and gratified to learn of the great prosperity and increased business
that has attended the business affairs of the Nevada County

this road and its accommodating corps of officials and employes continued success which it well merits and deserves.
