“The residents of the foothills in the
neighborhood of Camptonville and
Vicinity ‘have been considerably exercised for some time over the appearance of a California lion in that district says the Marysville Appeal. A
few days since Will Burris saw the lion
killing a sheep within 100 yards of his
house, and hastily picking tp his rifle
took a good, stéady aim, and upon firing the lion rolled over. It took some .
time for Will to satisfy himself that the
lion was dead, but after he had approached and shot him in the head
twice he became convinced that the!
terror of the neighborhood could dono
more harm, The neighbors were summoned and it was found that the dead

who is now president of the Congress
Gold Mining Company. Definite particulars cannot be learned today, but
it is believed that the purchase is the
outcome of nogotiations begun a year
ago between the owners of the mine
and a New York syndicate headed by
ex-Senator Warner Miller. There is
also a ramor that Congressman W. W.
Grout of Vermont, who is now in Arizona, is also interested in the purchase.
Some mining men put the purchase
price at $5,000,000, which were the figures suggested when an option was
granted on the minea year ago. The
Congress mines have been operated
for fiftee years, and the workings are
now ata depth of 8,000 feet, but it is
freely asserted that at twice the depth
ore bodies will be as extensive and
rich, if not more so. Prospecting by
diamond Grills has outlined enormous . .
ore bodies at that depth.
