Items Gleaned -From the Downleville Messenger of Saturday, George Osterman, who has been ably.) filling the position of machinist and blacksmith at the Gold Bluff mine for Several years, resigned his place last week, and on Monday took his departure for Nevada City to join his family, and where he will reside permanently, George is a first-clace hand at his trade and should readily find lacrative employment at one of the Nevada county mines, “The residents of the foothills in the neighborhood of Camptonville and Vicinity ‘have been considerably exercised for some time over the appearance of a California lion in that district says the Marysville Appeal. A few days since Will Burris saw the lion killing a sheep within 100 yards of his house, and hastily picking tp his rifle took a good, stéady aim, and upon firing the lion rolled over. It took some . time for Will to satisfy himself that the lion was dead, but after he had approached and shot him in the head twice he became convinced that the! terror of the neighborhood could dono more harm, The neighbors were summoned and it was found that the dead animal measured eight and one half feet in length, and weighed 150 pounds. nig skin will be preserved. by Mr. Barris, Judge Stanley A. Definite particulars cannot be learned today, but it is believed that the purchase is the outcome of nogotiations begun a year ago between the owners of the mine and a New York syndicate headed by ex-Senator Warner Miller. There is also a ramor that Congressman W. W. Grout of Vermont, who is now in Arizona, is also interested in the purchase. Some mining men put the purchase price at $5,000,000, which were the figures suggested when an option was granted on the minea year ago. The Congress mines have been operated for fiftee years,and the workings are now ata depth of 8,000 feet, but it is freely asserted that at twice the depth ore bodies will be as extensive and rich, if not more so.
