The Trolley System as a Means of Handling Farm Produce, An electrical journal calls attention to the fact that a short time ago an investigation was made into the condition of the country roads in Ohio by a State commission, with the special object of ascertaining whether it would not be possible to adopt the trolley on some of the roads, as a means of handling farm freight and produce. The condition of things disclosed by this inquiry was very near to that savagery; in two-thirds of the cotinties only dirt roads were found to exist, and these were useless for wheeled traffic nearly one-quarter of the year. It was shown that the power necessary to move a ton of freight over steel rails is one-eighth that reqnired on a macadam road, one. eighteeuth that on a graveled road, and but one-twenty-fifth that on an ordinary dirt road. — >. The report strongly advocated the use of light electric trolley roads, which would enable the farmer to send his food product: into the market fresh and crisp all the year round. This investigation appears to have been instrumental in bringing farmers gen: erally to a consideration of methods of produce transportation more in accordance with the average civilization of today. Pennsy!vania and New Jersey, where there are large centers of population and consumption, are making a move in the direction of improved traffic facilities, and there is_ reason to —believe that other States will soon follow, Farmers hitherto have not realized how comparatively cheaply such facilities can be provided, and the reported fact that a goed stone'road costs as much as a trolley road per mile to build is one that will appeal to them with undeniable weight. In some places it is quite possible that a much lighter form _ of trolley road than yet built might serve all the required ends of traffic, and it is suggested that even the telpher system— the running of freight cars on wire lines— might in certain cases be advantageously used. It is satisfactory to know that a start has-been made towards an’ improvement which concerns so vitally the interests of the agricultural jcommunity. Two roads’ are already laid out across the farming country, one in New J ersey and one in Ohio, both over thirty miles in length; while there are many parts, such as the New England States, where the rural trolley system can be brought into useful service, __ Retired. time friend, 8. D. Bosworth, retired frem the Postmastership of Grass Valley and Edward Morgan takes his place. For the past J 21 years Mr. Bosworth has been connected , M One way: or another with the Postoffice and he has held the Postmastership two the office has been conducted to the satisfaction of Uncle Sam, and as far as our people are concerned, the retiring Postiiaster tried to satisfy all, but of course he failed, for no' man could suit the miscellaneous crowd which congregates about a Postoffice. At all events, Mr, Bosworth has filled the-office well and retires with the satisfaction that he has pleased the peopleas welt as he kuew how and that he has dune hisduty. Look Out for Them, Telegraph: If the people of Nevada City and all of those outside towns far away from Grass Valley see a gang passing some morning and that gang clad in wrappers, wearing the largest kind of sun-bonnets, armed with frying-pans and fishing tackle, they need not be surprised, for there is’a party from this town going camping. They will take in Bowman’s Dam, the French Lake and. then will cross the mountains and go over-to Lake Independence, Tahoe and Donner lakes. In short, they will be a regular camping party, with Adolph Dulmaine at the head. The party will be composed of ladies and gentlemen, and they are going to supply their friends with fish, ! oOo oe Superior Court. MANYa@TIMES MARRIED. An Indiana Woman’s Great Récord in the Matrimonial Line. Varparaiso, (Ind.), July 31.—A wéman, who was until recently Mrs. Dr. Spencer, of Bourdon, has just been joined in wedlock to her eleventh husband, and, as the bride of today is but 44 years of age, time may possibly record many more matrimonial alliances. Her career is believed to be one of the most remarkable on record. She was a bride when a girl of 15. Ten years afterwards she was divorced, She was also separated from her second and third husbands. The fourth wes a pardoned convict from Jcliet. Death ended this union, and the season of mourning was followed by the choice of a fifth and sixth husband from among a.legion of suitors. She was .di“vorced from her seventh husband. Her eighth husband had a tragic ending, and at the age of 36 she married H. C. Brown, with whom she lived twe years. To this union the first child was born., Brown disappeared, and’ the next alliance, with Dr. Spencer, was terminated by his sudden death. The Coarts of the State fail to record a parallel with the ex-Mrs. Spencer’s checkered matrimonial life. Hurt at Marsh’s Mill. Henry Metzenburner, au employe of M. L.& D. Marsh, jand who works at their mill, was injured at that place today. He was engaged with others in transporting logs when he was run into by. the log carriage. Mr. Ricnarp Birks, the well-known Druggist, 207 McGill st., Montreal, P. Q., says: I have sold Ayer’s Family Medicines for 40 years, and-have heard nothing but good said of them. I know of many Wonderful Cures performed by Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, one in particular being that of a little daughter of a Church of England minister. The child was literally covered from head to foot with a red and exceedingly troublesome rash, from. which she had suffered for two or three years, im 8pite of the best medical treatmené available. Her father was in gréat distress about—the—ease, and, -at-my recommendation, at last began to administer Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, two bottles of which effected a complete cure, much to her relief and her father’s delight. I am sure, were he lgre to-lay, he would testify in the strongest terms as to the merits of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr. J.C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass.
