It is the Second Regiment, and every member hag reason to be proud that. he belongs to the organization. There are about 460 altogether, and in dress parade last evening we made quite a’ hit, as over three thousand people were present, which is more interest than is usually shown here. In fact the only exception the writer can call to mind was when the Governor visited us in camp last year. The Second Regiment met at Sacramento and-went-into camp here the beginning of the, week. The first mornibg the bugle routed us out at 6 o’clock, and after breakfast we had regimental and battalion drills, which lasted about two hours and a half, Major Simonds, Captain Bost and Captain Tyrrell continue to make themselves popular among the boys, Although they maintain strict discipline, in conformity with the rules governing the encampment, such a good feeling prevails that both officers and men are happy and contented. At the cook house the very best of everything is served, and Companies CO and I mess together. Frank Le Roy, @ jovial and genial cook from San Francisco, is in charge, and with. the belp of Lieutenant Walling, who furnishes the supplies, he is able to give us.as good meals as one could wish for. Oharles Stocks of Grass Valley is assistant cook, and if one goes hungry it fs because he is too tired to eat. The members of Oompany © are great favorites with the gentler sex here. The girls take to the mountain boys as thongh they were the “only ones on eartb,” and unless all signs fail several Santa Oroz dames will soon be making solemn promisce and change their residence to the mountain towns. BILL cae The Town Talk published an item to the effect that Robt. Mein, formerly of this city, was engaged to a daughter of Senator George O. Perkins. Mr. Mein asserts that the statement is false, and . has instructed his attorney to demand aretraction, and in case the paper failed to comply ‘with the request. that @ libel suit be commenced forthwith. (<0 0@e ee A Big Blowout. Some of our local readers may know Hing, or as he is called by some, Rosa, afat Chinese cook of this town. He has been employed’ for some length of time by one of she dredging. companies. Lately Hing decided to invest in a wife and a day or two he brought back from the city his bride. The friends of Hing were invited to a grand Ohinese wedding Lanquet and'‘a large number attended. The bride, the wedding ceremonies and the banquet cost the happy groom $1300.—Oroville Register. . California seems to have suddenly awakened to the fact that a concerted and, united effort must be made to present this State’s grand attractions to the rest of the world. The order of Native Sons of the Golden West, at the Grand Parlor session held in Santa Cruz, connegted itself prominently with the important movemeuts for the material improvement and beautifying of California. Provision was made by resolution for the appointment of committees on the development of the resources of the State, the preservation of its magnificent forests, the irrigation of its plains, and the restoration of historie landmarks. The different boards of trade of Oalifornia have lately bad-an awakening to the need of tnoreased advertising of the resources and products of its State, and the Native Sons have shown that they earnestly desire to cooperate with the movement, The various subordin: ate parlors which have been established in every county of the State can supply data to the committees appointed by the Grand President, and also serve aa a medium to disseminate the important: information gathered by the committee, , Grand President Byington appointed. the committees provided for at the last session of the Grand Parlor, and among the names of those committees are George L. Jones of Graes Valley on committee of Navy Yard memorial, Dr. O, W. Ohapman of Nevada City on Donner monument, and J. O. Tyrrell of Grass Valley on Publicity -and Press. Qe Finest of Raspberries.
