the bondholders. The same authority

formerly quite a producer and is believed to still be valuable, has been
idle for a number of years aside from}
what work tributers have done there.

Grass Valley, who is charged with attempting the murder of bis brother-inlaw, William H. Weeks, of San Francisco, while returning from the funeral
of Mrs. Weeks, promises to be very
short, says last evening’s Oakland Tri-. .

after but an hour of testimony the defense commenced its case.

\last night says the Department of State has been formally
tified by M. Cambon that he has received authority to sign
‘the protocol in behalf of the Spanish government. In diplomatic circles it is stated that the document will be drawn
up today and that as soon as it is signed hostilities’ will
cease.

BrussELts, Aug. 11—It is claimed that at a recent meeting of the Carlist leaders it was decided to immediately take
action and orders were issued for the Carlists to assemble.
It is said Don Carlos will personally enter Spain next Mon.
