Mrs, H. Pengelly. 3
The two O'Neill brothers.and Messrs,
Hawkins and Crase left yeahs on a
camping expedition.
A. surprise party was: pete . lest:
evening. at the home of Mrs. Wm.
Nankervis to Miss: ithel Davie: of
Sweatland.
Both of the Oda Fellows? holds
have decided now to join with the
tive Sons in the Admission Day picnic
‘at Shebley’s, and its success is assured.
Company I was mustered in last
night with fifty men enrolled: The.
Officers elected were Oaptain, F. M.
Miller; First’ Lieutenant, Charles A
Witter; Second Lieutenant, John H.
Richards. A banquet was afterwards
given at Fillmore’s hotel;and this event
was accompanied by toasting and sing::
ing. Lieutenant P. F. Simonds. responded to the toast “Company O,” the
members of which organization were
present in foree from the county seat:
It took Jim. Pendergast just nine:
rounds last night to muke Mike Wheelihan quit fighting. It was a give and .
take mill from the start, and ulthough
it was apparent from the time the men
came into the ring that the big burly
Sacramentan out-classed tha Grass
Valley youngster, the latter was game
to the last. Mike was practically
whipped in the seventh round, and at
the opening of the ninth was so weuk
as to. be almost helpless, Pendergast
fouled repeatedly after the first round,
but Jerome Deasy, who was referee,
did not seem to see the coarse work,
THE INCANDESCENT LAMP,
‘It Can Start a Fire es Well as Other
‘Electric Lights,
Many people are apt to think {hat because an incandéscent lamp is inclosed
ina glass: bulb, and its incandescent
filament cannot therefore come into
contact with anything inflammable,
that the bnlb can be used under all
Conditions and in contact with all kinds
of. materials: with but little danger.
That this.isa mistake has been proved
by several fires in show windows where
the hanging incandescents have been
allowed to touch lace or other more or
less filmy materials with which the
window was draped. ‘Testimony on
this subject can be given also bya
rash youth who,: during -the . zero
weather last winter, went to sleep with
a burning incandescevt lump wrapped
in a handkerchief at bis feet. An hour
afterwards his slumbers were rudely
brcken by a sensation of extreme iiscomfort at the tips of his toes; the
oom was full of smoke and the smoul-}y.
dering bedclothes were on‘the point of
bursting into flame. But the record
in the denionstration of what beat an
incandescent lamp is capable of throwing out is broken in a photograph lately published of a .wooden partition,
through which a large hole had been
burned simply by the pressure upon it
laterally of au incandescent lamp, The
lamp which was on a 110-volt circuit,
bung from a tusible* rosette. Some
mechanics who were at work in the
room wanted the light closer, and
twisted the flexible cord arcund a nail
in a freshly finished wooden partition.
‘lhe Jemy, withits bulb resting on the
eheating, was leit Luining when‘ the
workmen left ut five o’clock p. m:
When they came back to work at seven
o'clock the next morning the lamp had
Lurned a‘bole larger thanilself through
the wainscoting und wus hangiug clear
of contact with the charred wood,
which had Semtanately burned itself
