Walling Nominated For Presidential Elector, Sacramento, August 12.—The Republican Congressional Convention at this afternoon’s session nominated Hon. J. M. Walling of Nevada’ City as the Presidential Elector from the Sec. ond District. ; The Heat Continues. PHILADELPHIA, August 12—Up. to 11 o'clock today five deaths had occurred from the heat, besides. many cases of. prostration. : ‘Insane Person Fatally Injured. Prrrssure, Aug. 12—D. D. Malley, while temporarily insane from the effects of the heat, jumped from a thirdstory Window of the hotel at which he Was stopping and was fatally injured. Made Crazy by the-Heat, Cuicaco, Aug. 12.—There was a good breeze this morning, still the thermometer registered 91 degrees,. Up to 12 o’clock last night 30 cases of sunstroke were reported, and upwards of 50 cases of prostration. A shower last night cooled the atmosphere considerably. The number of -persons rendered insane by the heat will probably never bé known. .At least 27 insane. persons have been locked up within the past two days, their malady being attributed to the hot weather. : with taking dispensary around at the State’s expense to tect his cowardly bones. Wild Plunge. ful accident occured near here today, by which two men were instantly killed, another burt. so badly that he died a few hours later and two others severely injured so that. small hope of their recovery is entertained. ~A Bad Mistake, Corvmpus, O0., Aug. 11.—A fatal. collision took place this morning at the Sandusky street crossing between the regular passenger train on the Toledo and Ohio Central railway and a yard engine. The two engines met. head on and were badly wrecked. The baggage and mail cars were thrown down a steep bank and badly smashed, Charles Vance, the engineer of the yard engine, was crushed to death. Charles Cullison, engineer of the passenger train, and his fireman, William St. Clair, were fatally injured, . ° A Deep Mystery. Wasuineton, Aug. 11.—The police have thus far failed to secure any clew tothe mystery surrounding the death of A. H. Pile, the son of ex-Representative Pile of California, who has been in temporary charge of the Silver National headquarters. When the body was found in the Potomac the shoes and hat were missing. There is‘a theory that he was a victim of “knockout drops” at a gambling resort, but this is discredtted by the fact that his silver watch was found on him, Denied the Application, —_. After the usual preliminaries Hon. Grove L. Johnson was by acclamation unanimously nominated for Congress from the Second District. At tie Mayflower. Development work and prospecting is being done at this mine, on Canada Hill. In doing this work more or less quartz has been taken out and there is now over 100 tons of ore in the bin at the mill. The mill is not ranning now and will not be started for some time yet. Good Clean Up. ‘ Telegraph:—A clean up of eight loads of ore from the Indiana mine has just been completed at the Electric mill. The mine is located on the almost top. of Osborn Hill and is owned by Michael White and sons. The ledge isa good sized one and is in a région famous for rich quartz viens.
