_. Mr, Glasson Declines.
Grass Valley Union ; ; A correspondCity Herald strongly
urges the nomination of John Glasson
of this city for Senator on the Republican ticket. Mr. Glasson has stated
“that he will not enter the contest
against L. 8. Calkins, which leaves a
clear field for the latter. Mr. Calkins
_ is one of the bright, brainy editors of
' the Transcrret, and he will make it
lively for whoever may be pitted
against him on the Democratic’ ticket.

Will Make a Big Difference.
One of the best informed men in the
country on the management of railroads is Chauncey Depew. He recently
said. in speaking
en aiding June 80, 1896, the
earned $42,500,000.
Out of that we paid $16,000,000 to emand wages amourted to. $30,000,000.
The interest on our bonds, payably in
gold, amounted to $4,170,000. The}
rental of leased lines, payablein gold,

been reasonably successful. The

ployes. The operating expenses, taxes . :
amounted to $5,888,000. So you see, 4
plans drawn by Mr. Fancher the build.
ing will be handsome in appearance
and convenient in arrangement. The
ground floors are to beconcrete, and
the estimated cost of the building, including hot water throughout and sanitary plumbing, is $14,000. :
Bids for erecting the building will
be received up tothe 25th instant. If
a satisfactory proposal is received the
contract will be let and arrangements
made for beginning work by the 1st of
September. Contractors should read
the advertisement in today’s TranSCRIPT.
Mexican Dollar Bait,
The idea of illustrating practically
the difference between a silver dollar
which circulates merely on its. bullion
value and one which is held up to}
parity with gold by the Government
has seized upon a good many people.
The Buchanan Milling Company of . began
Niles, Michigan, has offered to pay
one dollara bushel for wheat if alis a bona fide offer and many farmers
/are taking advantage of it. But they
will find they can buy only 50 cents’
worth of goods with the Mexican dollar. Some time ago Senator Thurston
illustrated the same thing. He had a
joint debate with Bryan at Lincoln,
. and before entering the hall he went to
one of ‘the local banks and for an
American dollar bought two “Mexican
dollars, which he exhibited to the
audience.—Oakland Enquirer.
Compressed Air,
‘The experiments recently made inNew York of employing compressed
car was equipped with a tank of com-.
pressed air, which could be kept under
pressure of two thousand pounds to
the square inch. The motor was operated at the rate of 150 ponnds to the
square inch, The car attained a speed
of from one to fifteen miles an hour
at the will of the operator. The car
was equipped with a brake and sand
It could be stopped in less than its
own length when going at a high rate
of speed.
