A Formor Resident of Chis City Passes Away. At San Francisco, last Saturday, Leonard Welling passed away at the home of his daughter, Mre. M. Fredenbarr, at 1815 Ellis street. Deceased was a former resident of this city, and lived with the Fredenburr family for many years, during their residence on Gold Flat. When the latter went to San Francisco about three years ago Mr, Welling remained here and looked after their property until last winter, when, on account of his rapidly failing health, he went to San Francisco in hope of being benefitted by the change. He had been suffering with stomach complaint for several years which finally developed into a cancer, and which was the cause of his death. Daring the past six months he had been a patient sufferer, and with calm resigpation awaited the end. He waa a native of Germany, aged 67 years, and besides his deughters, Mrs. Fredenburr and Mrs. Alice Grace, he leaves a son— Fred Welling, whose place of residence is at present unknown. His grandchildren are: Carl A., Byron W., Henrietta E. and Florence D. Fredenburr; Prentice, Albert and Lawrence Cortimarche, and Calvin Grace. The funeral took place at San Francisco to-day, interment being made at Laurel Hill cemetery. According to the Republican, the facts that led up to his conviction are as follows: Mr. Kurtz, of Truckee, noticed a man with whom he is acquainted, in an intozicated condition. This man had falien from a bench and was lying in the street. Mr. Kurtz took hold of him and tried to make him understand that he might be robbed. Two bystanders reproved Mr. Kurtz for the interest be was taken in the man’s welfare. They left and ina few minutes a fellow came along and assaulted Kurtz. A few blows were struck and the fight was stopped. It was Kelly who made the assault. him arrested and he pleaded guilty to the charge. The boldest piece of criminal work done in Truckee for a long tinie was a robbery committed at noon, last Thursday, says the Republican, in the corral Gus Schlampf was going down the alley when he heard a man cry out in a muffled voice, “let me gol” Looking over into the corral he saw.three men. One was holding another from the back! with his arm under the captive’s chin, in the reguler strong-arm fashion, while the third was going through his pockets. Mr. Schlumpf jumped over the fence and the thieves both ran away. They soon separated and he followed one of them, at the same time The footpad finally went into Wm. McDougald’s saloon. Constable Harvey, who wae unable to respond immediately, notified Mr. MeDcugald, and the latter followed the man up and arrested him in the railroad yard. He gave the name of Harry Johnson and when searched had $10.75 on his person, which he claims to bave received from his mother. No trace could be found of the other man though a thorough search was made, The man who was robbed claimed to have had $50 that morning and had spent but a few dollars before he was held up. Ge was quite drunk and was anable to tell a well connected story. He subseqnently disappeared and. no trace of the old man could be found when he was wanted. It is evident that he he did not want to appear in the case and left town. Without his evidence the case was a weak one, as it could not be ascertained bow much money, if any, was obtained. It was decided to let Johnson, whois scarcely eighteen. years of «ge, enter a plea df guilty to a charge of battery. This be did and Justice Hill sentenced him to serve 125 days in the Oounty Jail. Jobnson is a weak-minded, boy, hardly responsible for bis actions and it is believed that he was led into the robbery by his older arene who escaped. ee K. of P, Lodge.
