T is the age of things mysterious. In physics‘ we ‘have
the X-ray and radium, the new force that transcends all
~~ others and seems capable of giving off destructive dyn. ,
-amic influence without diminution of its own bulk and.
power, The capacity of the atoms which enter .cosmic-matter is being inquired into, and mau walks upon forces that in
proper crystallization hold the planet together, but by atomic
changes may explode it into fine flinders: ~_
Allthis is the mysterious of the physical. The myswent no further in its application than to amuse audiences by
making clergymen pick each others’ pockets and grave citizens stand on their heads. It was to modern hypnotism
what the X-ray is to radium. Hypnotism is mesmerism with
suggestion added in such way as to make seemingly normal
people cut capers and commit, crimes under the control of
their “influence.” Perhaps this newly discovered influence
may account for ancient witchcraft. It is written in, the : Pncumonia.
annals of witch-burning in New England that one young Died ol
fellow procured the burning at the stake of a girl. who had
rejected his amatory suit because, he said, he was unable to. ,
sleep for thinking of her, and therefore he must be bewitched,
and he probably was, but not in the way he thought.
Hypnotism has had many things laid at its door. People‘arraigned for crime have pleaded hypnotic suggestion,
under which they have committed murder and theft.
“A San Francisco newspaper recently gave full-page publicity, with pictures and interviews, to another phase of hypnotism. It is accused of having broken an engagement between two young people! This is the most serious charge
yet made against it. The course of true love was running
as smooth as molasses, when suddenly it became as rough as
the breakers on Columbia River bar and turbid as a slickensbearing stream, and then in-a jiffy it was all off between Jack
and Jill, and its centrifugal force sent them apart.
There is something, however, more serious than hypnotic force in this case. We. who had the simple, old-fashioned training were taught to believe that the domestic réla—
tions and the proceedings antecedent to the foundation of a
family and a home were so intensely personal that the papers
and the public had nothing to do with them. In those whole
some days it was a sign of decent self-respect to presérve inviolate the confidences of the person, the heart, the home and
the family. All this seems to be passing away. The affairs
of the heart are given glaring publicity, and the parties most
interested in their.confidential nature blab volubly to reporters and give up their pictures to illustrate the story: Things
once sacred are publicly discussed as if they were no more
sentimental than the purchase of a chicken in the market or
trading horses at the crossroads.
Talk of romance! She has become a painted jade, a
mixture of gossip and hussy, discussed by the parties most
concerned as freely as if she were a milch cow, a racehorse or
The down is rubbed off the peach and the bloom from the
grape, and vulgarity sits in the blaze of publicity; where
once rose the shaded shrine of domestic and pefsonal privacy
and decency.
Hypnotism, odic force, suggestion-and astral influence
may ‘be pleaded as the reason for this change. But the real
reason is the hopeless vulgarizing of life and the sacrifice of
all that was once dear because personal and confidential to
the desire for publicity and sensation.

A Happy Marriage Con~~ summated This
Forenoon.
At ten o’clock this forenoon Ralph
‘Maitland and Miss Mary Phelan, both
of this city, were joined in the holy
bonds of matrimony at the residence
of Mr. and Mrs. M; B. Wilburn, o
Grove street. The knot that caused
two hearts to beat as one was tied by
Rev. Father Gilmartin, assfstant rector of St. Oanice’s Catholic church.
Mrs. Joseph Bernard, while Mr.
George Opughlan acted in the capacity
of beet man, A number of the relative and intimate friends were present.
At the conclusion of the ceremony
congratulations were extended, and an
elaborate breakfast followed. The
joyous party spent a merry time at
table, and toasts for the future welfare of Mr. and Mrs. Maitland were
offered shortly before the time set for
the newly-wedded couple to leave for
the depot. Several of the guests. accompanied the bride and groom to
was marked by a profusion of rice and
other good-luck tokens. Mr. and Mrs.
Maitland will enjoy their honeymoon
at Sacramento and adjacent places. _
The bride is well and favorably
known to many of our readers, She
was born near North San Juan, and
passed her girlhood days in that vicinity. In the several little near-by
towns she always commanded the respect of a host of friends, For several years she has made her home in
this city, where ber kindly disposition and other excellent traits of character have endeared her to our people.
Now we come to Mr. Maitland.
Everybody knows Ralph, and his
popularity is only excelled by his
genial manner and good characteriatios. .This is saying much for the
new. benedict, as his friends are numerous and hie sfsndard in manhood’s scale of excellent repute,
The TRansonipT extends it’s congratulations to Mr, and Mrs. Maitland.
May their wedded life be one continasl-round of unalloyed bliss; may

KINGSTON, Jamaica, August 12.—A terrific hurricane

It-is estimated that a million dollars’ worthof damage was done. Every banana plant on
this part of the island was destroyed, and property in Kingston was also badly damaged. No lives were lost, as far as.
A False Alarm. .
Three campers, who arrived here today on their way to the mountains,
were the innocent cause:of much alarm
to the local convict sleuths. Their
horses needing shoeing they took them
to Ed Artbur’s horseshoeing establishment on Sacramento street, and while
there one of the travel-stained tourists
happened to catch the penetrating eye
of a person who made sure he was
none other than the notorious convict
Miller, one of the recent escapes from
Folsom State prison. Reporting his
suspicions no little excitement was
caueed and preparations were‘made to
capture the “bad” man. But upon investigation the whole affair turned out
to be a myth, as the gentleman in
question is a respected citizen of the
lower country, and is probably ere this
treating the incident in its proper
light. The person with the “eagle
eye” is thinking some of engaging in
& more reliable vocation.

Meserg. Leiter & Dunlap, proprietors
of Hotel Antlere, yesterday received a
large crate from Tacoma, Washington,
containing one of the finést elk heads
ever seen here. The animel is a 12prong buck, the horns measuring
forty-six Inches from tip to tip, while
from the base of the brain to the tip of
the horns it is forty nine inches. The
antlered monarch was killed in the
State of Washington.
The head of the created leader proud
and high, even in death, will ocoupy a
conspicuous place in the hotel office,
just back of the counter. Sarrounding the noble frontlets will be arranged
fourteen pairs of deer horns of various sizes, thus presenting to the gaze
8 vision that will thrill and delight
the eye of the enthuciastic sportsman,
and which also forms an insignia that
is admirably adapted to the place.
