Sacramento Preparing For Its Electrical Carnival and Native Sons Celebration: SacraMeEnto, Cal., August 14.—Signs of preparations for the electric carnival and " the Native Sons celebration, which have been going on for some time, begins to be noticeable on the streets, Bicycles, coat lapels, private lamps and show windows are q beginning to be decorated, and most of the * : Sacramento young ladies are engaged in . . 3 making carnival buttons, or trimming hats ish ; with carnival colors, Many contracts have 5) been let bythe Executive Committee for arches, illuminated with incandescent lamps, \a to be suspended over the streets. The dome of the Capitol building is being wiFed and when finished will -bear 2600 lamps, 1000 5 more than displayed on the electric tower of ee the Midwinter Fair, The chief attraction will be*the electric floats, for which severel designs have already been decided upon and many more are under consideration. Chief among the stationary pieces are: The American flag; an arch bearing the Words, ‘‘Welcome—New Sacramento— Progress, ”’; an arch bearing the names of Frauklin, Morse and Faraday; an immense horseshoe ‘composed of approximately 300 lamps, In auldition there will be a great many private displays by business houses, The Executive Committee will meet the City Trustees tomorrow, when ‘it is thought arrangements will be made to wire all municipal . buildings. The city is full of Native Sons delegates preparing quarters and perfecting arrangements for the great events, 1€, _ + Oe + Diy Try it, snsies + 0@e + sai No: More. Drawbacks. The Yreka Jouriial says: Early Sunday in Yreka, the train being the largest aud ly heaviest ever brought over the Yreka railroad, it taking three large engines from the + Southern Pacific line; besides the Yreka engine, to get it over the grade between this place and Montague. A large crowd had BE gathered at the depot to witness the intereating performance of unloading the cars. The performance on Monday #fternoon was one of the very best ever witnessed by resi% dents of this county. The great tent cov— ered several acres and was crowded to its r fullest capacity, The clowns were full of new jokes, and the menagerie contained a fine collection of animals. The horses ‘ looked fine and are kept in good order by being well fed and cared for. The wagons seemed quite new, and the cars bringing = them are also new and built especially for ‘them. It is all a new outfit made up for a tour of the Pacific Coast, and thence east ward again by the southern route overland, 6 . Awarded . Orders left at the . office on the Plaza will be promptly atSuch Is the General Opinion in the East “orm and Western States Alike, For several months, it is said, times in the East have been improving, wages increasing, trade reviving, labor extending, and business confidence rapidly asserting itself once more, Presumably, to a degree, this is true, and further, probably it is also true of the Pacific Coast. We sincerely hope it is true of all parts of our‘land, The unrest and panicky condition of the past has been more the result of business fear than tangible fact. It is also true, probably, that the surreptitious demonetization of silver had ay much to do with bringing on the scare as anything. The cause, however, for the suddenness of the change was more on account of a change of the country’s political and fiscal policy than anything else. The business world trembles when such a change is unex pectedly brought about. Importers and dealers on a large scale get the. scare fever. Banks become suddenly paralyzed by scared depositors, Capitalists refuse loans, and everybody begins to poke their dollars down stocking legs instead of putting them into trade circulation, Upon this hypotheses we conclude that the effect of the late Republican majorities in nearly all elections is now being realized in general better times. This is not because the Republican policy.is best but because it is the safest for the country in its protective features and known tendencies, The other, and all experimental manipulation of tariff matters, is fraught with the danger of producing a panic, Do we want a better object lesson than the immediate past? So far as tariff and all tax and revenue .matters are concerned, without a known and settled: policy there follows danger of shaky times. Now it begins to dawn that settled conditions are rapidly obtaining and hence these glad tidings of better times. It is also probable that ao anticipated change in our money systein has much to do with inspiring confidence, In this follows much reason and consistency. Upon our financial policy depends our true prosperity. The trend of public sentiment now seems to be toward welcoming our better times and permanently establishing a protective tariff and free silver. : _——— — + «@e-o—— WHIsKERS. that are premanturely gray or faded should be colored to prevent the look of age, and.
