The Wheatland Four Corners, ‘one of the ablest weekly papers in California, in its] man who understands the newspaper busilast issue says : The present State campaign has narrowed down to live issues on National lines. The foremost of these are the questions of tariff and money. We have no hesitancy in deélaring unequivocally that the Republican platform. voi¢es our sentiments on those matters exactly. We feel that we can endorse every utterance of the Republican candidate for Governor, wherein, in his opening speech for the campaign, he discusses those questions. Parts of that excellent oration seem to us to be defective, but upon the whole it goes home to every voter and sounds the keynote of the campaign. Do the people relish hard times? Do they favor a National or a State policy which tends to keep people out of employment, reduces wages, closes factories, forecloses mortgages, fosters “industrial armies,” creates poverty, brings bankruptcy, depreciates currency, reduces . money circulation, reduces the U. 8. Treasury surplus, prevents prompt payment of the National debt, sends U. S. gold to foreign lands, makes silver bullion worthless. because it cannot be coined on any terms, compels the issuance of new government bonds and stagnates commerce and trade? It seems to us that even the mere agitation of so called ‘‘tariff reform” in this country and the complete blocking.of free silver for money, are the impelling-causes of. such a dismal state of affairs to say nothing about voting to mature and keep it up. So long as we honestly feel that this view is correct. gees. = i eee ‘We cannot, will not and must not remain = L. voaghbnibbie silent. We cannot be alert and independent * ; Gro. W. Jones, : al5-td Of County Central Committee. and keep quiet. The ends of journalism, in its highest meaning, are subverted and even degraded to do so. E There is. a plane of -Democracy to which all may feel honored to wscend, but it is not of the tariff gullotine order. There are hundreds and thousands of Democrats who agree with this sentiment no matter what the majority of that party may assume. It is this fact that has caused such a bitter contest in the present. Democratic Congress in_ large part, In fact that party is far from being a unit on tariff issues, The Republican party stands as a unit on the MeKinley law. ‘The benign influence— the prosperity of the people under that law was never questioned until the present party in power threaterred-to—repeal it. ~ They have flocked about the “reform delusion” and given the Democrats all the aid possible to boost that delusion into form and In this the Populists are equally blamable. . , GOOD JUDGMENT. A Man Who Knows a Good Thing When He Sees It. The Grass Valley Union is edited by a ness through and through, and when he says a cotemporary. is a ‘live newspaper a man’s life could be safely bet upon the proposition. In verification of the above statement we herewith reproduce the-ifollowing, which aj peared in this nrérning’s Union, headed, ‘tA First-Cuass NerwsPAPER: ‘©The Nevada City TRANscRIPT is a live, newsy paper, and is always filled with interesting reading matter. The I er Peculiar to Itself. Hood's A GRAND SPEECH. That of Morris M. Estee Delivered in San Francisco. Never before has a political speech been made in California that has caused such widespread comment of a favorable nature as has the presentation of his position en the vital political issues of the day by Morris M. Estee, Republican nominee for Governor. His masterly effort has once more demonstrated his marked ability in grappling with the knotty problem of state and to so place them before the public as to make them sufficiently clear for the most unlearned voter and the child to understand. In an editorial commenting upon the nomination of Mr. Estee as Governor we said that he is a clean man of the people and is with them heart and soul on all public questions. It has always been thus. He has battled skillfully for the masses and his speech in San Francisco again provés the truth of our assertions. Copies of it can be had on application to the TRANscRIPt. i — “Her—hair—always looks so perfectly 1@vely.”. Why ? OHLEYER. Another Hydraulic Mine Started Up With the Monitor. A dispa'ch was received here last evening stating that the United States Debris Commission had given Joseph Hustler per mission to set his hydraulic monitor to work. This morning a lively stream was playing upon the banks and it seemed like the old prosperous times coming back to Nevada county. The mine is situated in the rich -, est sectionof the Cherokee district, and. is known as the Hustler hydraulic mine. The present restraining works have a capacity of over two hundred thousand cubic yards of debris, By the time this is filled the Hustler company willhave’ another bg dam buit so the working of that mine for an indefinite _time.is assured. Geo. Ohleyer and a few other valley cranks, who never did have. the prosperity ef the miners, or even the farmers, as to that matter, at heart, will be the only ones regretting that the monitors are being started up again. —_—_— 2 #@ee ~~ — Death of Ch aries Hepler.
