NOTHER MEETING of the Nevada County Promotion Committee was held last evening at the office of the South Yuba Water Company to further perfect arrangements for the entertainment of the excursionists, who will visit Nevada County next week. The meeting was one of the largest and most. enthusiastic that has yet been held by the committee and the various reports received through the sub-committees gave every assurance that the extended program arranged for next week would by a great success in every detail and that a large number of visitors will be here to view this section of California and gain a personal knowledge of its resources. The California Promotion Committee, which received 1000 copies of the booklet just issued by the Nevada county committee, has already applied for more copies, stating that Nevada county has issued the handsomest and most concise books of this kind in California. A letter trom F. M. Rutherford of Truckee stated he had distributed the 2000 booklets sent him among people from whom return might be expected. It was reported that Nevada County’s exhibit at the ferry building in San Francisco is arousing much interest their intention of coming. The exhibit elicits much praise from the thousands of visitors who have witnessed it. Good work is being done by Mr. Butler, who is in charge of the San Francisco exhibit and it was decided to send him an additional number of booklets with instructions to distribute them to the best advantage. There are still Sooo eopies of the book on hand and most of these will be reserved for dis— tribution among our visitors and for Strangers who may write and apply for them. In the meantime, parties desiring to have books sent to friends in the East can have them forwarded by leaving the names and addresses with any member of the Promotion Committee. This course is expected to produce substantial results. The picnic and barbecue committee presented an encouraging report, which showed that the menibers of that com-= mittee had made great headway and had nearly completed all details in connection with their part of the program, 9. Lee Leiter appeared _before_the-Promotion-Committeet and reported that Milo Lodge, Knights of Pythias, had appointed a committee of thirty to go to “Colfax ina body and welcome the visiting Knights, in addition to the band. Superintendent C. P. Loughridge of the Narrow Gauge Railtoad Co., who was present at the meeting stated that his company would not make any charge for the transportation of any reasonable number of persons. In reply to the question as to what he thought a reasonable number, Mr. Loughridge said that five from €ach town besides the band. On motioa the latter number decided, for it is feared that the capacity of the road will be taxed to its utmost on that date in order to accommodate the excursionists. , The matter of decorating the town brought forth consid. erable discussion. The Grass Valley Board of Trade has decided to decorate its hall at its own expense and it is the unanimous sentiment of the committee that the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce do the same. . The business houses were not requested to decorate, but if any desire to do so they can use their own discretion. It was the unanimous expression of opinion that all business houses in Nevada City and Grass Valley should close on Friday, August 22d, in order that everyone may have an opportunity to extend the hand of welcome to visitors and unite with them in the festivities at Glenbrook Park. The mining companies will also be asked to allow their employes an opportunity to attend the picnic. The Chambers of Commerce of both cities will interview the mine superintendents with this object in view. The committee having in charge the entertainment of the visitors reported that good progress is being made with their work. A number of bids for the different privileges at Glenbrook Park during the picnic were received, On motion all bids were rejected and new bids will be received at the meeting ou next Monday evening. During the time the Promotion Committee was in ses— sion, the reception committee also held a meeting at the National hotel, at which various matters was discussed relative to the reception of the visitors. It is aot thought possible to obtain enough vehicles to accommodate all, so another committee will be appointed to guide the strangers to the TRANSCRIPT = ee SUDDEN DEATH, Mrs. John Hume Bx. pired Barly This Morning. nteresting News tems Told in * Brief Way for Busy Readers. They are generally dingy little rooms, the walls blackened with the grease and smoke of generations, In the rear is an old fashioned fireplace with a number of pots and kettles, from which savory steam arises. The largest is always for macaroni, for that is the staff of life. The others contain soup and various kinds of fish and vegetables, while on the counter, which usually projects mto the street, the cooked food is spread out in large pang “and bowls. The customers come along with pans and twekets, look over the stock and make their selection. The prices are remarkably low. Fish, vegetables, fruit and macaroni, the chief articles of Neapolitan diet, are cheaper here, it {s said, than in any other place in the world, and at one of these cooking shops a good dinner can be obtained for 2 cents and enough for a family for 5 cents.—Chicago Record Herald. The Balletin of yesterday afternoon says: ays With all the pulling and hauling of opponents, who are trying to get. within shouting distance of their claims agents, Governor Gage is not only holding his own, but is steadily gaining votes. On Wednesday men who are keeping in touch with bia fight estimated his strength at that time at 417, just enough to nominate him on the first ballot. It was stated then that the Governor would get not less than 475 votes. Today his strength is estimated at 384, This allows him but sixty-one votes in Los Angedes county, whereas it is likely that he will get several more. The latest returns from Los Angeles are as follows: Gage, 53; Flint, 27; unpledged, 16. Of the latter Gage will get eight su ®, and may gat _twelve.-Pardes is-eleiming slaysn of the unpledged delegates, but the Gage men say the doctor will wake up when the roll is called. Ia fhis city Gage will have at the least calculation 151 votes, and may get 157, Despite rumors to the contrary, the Thirty-fifth district delegation is not breaking away. Allof the delegates, with one exception are for Gage and this one, A. P, Van Duzer, is .Dow eaid to be thinking of going with the delegation. The four anti-Gage votes in the Thirty-seventh district are wobbling, and may come into camp atany time. Another thing to be considered is a break in the Primary League ranks. Five of the twenty-two are expected to go to Gage. If all these changes occur, the Goveroor will get 160 out of the 177 from San Francisco, : The situation as it stands now leaves n@ consolation to the Governor’s enemies. They are making loud claims bat have little or nothing to back them. Only three countias remain, Santa Cruz, Contra Costa and Sonoma. These counties have just forty-four delegates in all, and as their vote can not make a great difference the allied editors might as well prepare for a show-down., Conservative politicians give Flint “162 votes.and say tbat when the other tbree counties are in he will not at thé outside have more than 170,
With only 170 votes as his limit. of strength, practical politicians ask where Flint is to get 246 more, the number he needs to nominate him. He has no large trading delegations, and neither Pardee nor Bdsoncan throw him their strength. Most of Flint’s delegates are with him for same boat. A FAMOUS HIGHWAY. . The Cumberland Road, Which Was Projected by Henry Clay. The most remarkable highway built in the United States early in the nineteenth century was the so called Cumberland road, which was to extend from Cumberland, Md., through south. western Pennsylvania, over the Alle. ghany mountains to the Ohio at Wheeling, W. Va., and then on toiSt. Louis. It was so well constructed that it is a . good road today. Henry Clay was its . projector and chief supporter, and his services in its behalf are commemorated by a monument near Wheeling. We are told by letters written at that period that “there were sometimes twenty gayly painted four horse coaches each way daily. The cattle and sheep were-never out-of sight, and -canyvas Outside Skirts Outside Sk covered wagons were drawn by six to . twelve horses.” On this great road, which eventually passed into. the hands of the states through which it runs, the government expended no less a sum than $7,000,000. Within a mile of it on either side the country was_a wilderness, but on the highway itself the traffic was as dense as in the main street of a large town. be later on, Ten miles an hour was the usual speed for coaches. ‘rom Baltimore to WheelIng ran lines of freight wagons, which Traveler’s Samples--We bought them cheap and we carried ten tons, drawn by twelve “horses and with wheels ten feet in afameter.—Pearson’s Magagine, Curious Migrations. In Norway and Sweden a curious mil: gration takes place, the irregular migration of the lemming. There is no teHing where this strange animal will beglir its march southward threugh Norway and Sweden in search of food. The interval between one migration money. and the next is seldom less than seven years or, as in one instance, more than seventeen years, The lemming is a species of rodent and resembles in some ways our coimon’ water rat. Once started, these strange creatures press on in a straight OAV VAVAVAY) line. There is no checking their march. If a wall or a house is in their way, they will try to climb it rather than g0 around it, and if they come to a stack of corn they will eat it and then go forward. The lemmings are good swimmers, and so they do not mind rivers and ponds, although they cannot keep afloat in rough water. : The migration comes to a fatal finish. Taking a direct course toward the southwest and southeast, the animals arrive after awhile at the seashore. .
