ALGER WAS ALL RIGHT.
‘There is a strongsentiment prevailing .
outside of the Democratic .
yanks that Gen. Alger filled the arduous
. yet of secretary of war most ad_qnirably. The immonse amount of
“Gabor thrust npon the head of the war
department when the Spanish-American war broke out was simply tremendons, and that be did so well is
more than thousa:ds of men: could
have done under the surrounding cirgumstances. In reference to the mag‘Bificent reception given to General
Alger, the Inter Ocean only reflects
our own views when it says: “The
‘eelf-poise of General Alger in the re“ception tendered: him by men: ofall
parties on his return to Detroit was
admirable. Even the most captious of
, General Alger’s critics will admit that.
‘ander as strong temptation as ever beset a public man he yexhibited the finest
sense of propriety. Governor Pingree,
in his speech of welcome, enlarged
upon the point that General Alger re‘tarned to Michigan a man with a
grievance; with such a grievance that
amends could be made only by an uprising of the people. But, with Governor Pingree holding open the door,
with the strongest temptation to enter
“japon self-defense and recrimination,
General Alger, after a general reference
to'the achievements of the war and his
record as secretary of war, said: ‘And
now, my fellow citizens, I come home
without a grievance. During that
. struggle, and while that great work was"
upon me,I can truthfully say that I
had from the President all the support that ‘he could give. We went
through that struggle and came out
~ victorious. We transported across
the seas more than 160,000 men, one
way and the other, without an accident., We fought battles in the Philip:
pines, in Cuba, and in Puerto Rico, and
we never lost a battle, a stand of colors,
a prisoner or a gun. Wherever the
American flag was planted by the
American soldier there it stands, and
there it shall stand forever.’ This was.
magnificent. This was a proclamation
to all Republicans that the late secretary of war is, as he always has been, a
stalwart Republican, and still as he
was atthe beginning of the war,.a
strong advocate of what came to be
known as the McKinley policy of expansion. ‘This was a notice also to!
Governor Pingree and his circle of
anti-expansionists
that Geyeral Alger
was abandoning not one tittle of his
annexation «program, and that he was
not lowering the flag of stalwart Republicanism through any personal disappointment or grievance. No more
comprehensive
condensation of war
history has been made by apy writer
or speaker than that made by General
Alger at Detroit. Republicans everywhere will rejoice over the warmth of
the welcome extended to the late secretary of war on his return to his old
home, but they will exult’ more over
what he said on that occasion.
It is terrible to think of what may
be fall the man who lies to an editor.
Last week a delinquent subscriber said
he would square up on Saturday, which .
was pay-day, if he lived. He’s dead.!
Another said, “I’ll see yoa tomorrow.” .
He's stone blind. Still another said, .
“J will pay. you tomorrow, or go to the .
devil.” He’s gone. There are many
who ought to take warning at the awful
fate of these fellows who lied to the editor.—Miner Index.

The Coquette. .
A coquette is a being who wishes to

"Tis a career that requires great abilities, infinite pains, a gay and airy spirit.
“Tig the coquette that provides all
amusements, suggests the riding party,
plans the picnic, gives and guesses
charades, acts them. She is the stirring
element amid the heavy congeries of social atoms; the soul of the house, the
salt of the banquet. Let any one pass a
very agreeable week. or it may be ten
days, under any roof, and analyze the
cause of his satisfaction, and one might
safely make a gentle wager that his solution would present him with the frolic
phantom of a coquette.—Lord BeavonsLt
