TRANSORIPT, San Franorsco, Aug. 19.—Mattie Overman has made a detailed written confession wherein she says that all the charges that have ‘been made of Rev. C. O. Brown’s unlawful intimacy with her are true. The confession covers many pages of foolscap, and is in the possesion of Rev. W. W.Scudderof Alameda who was chairman of the committee on credentials at the investigation instituted by the conference. Miss Overand herself as his willing tool. She says he purjured himself throughout in his testimony. Sacramento Printers Protest Sacramento, Aug. 19.—There was an exciting meeting of Typographical Union No.46. Resolutions were adopted by a large majority condemning the action of the State Typographical Union, which recently met at Fresno, in demanding an investigation of the . affairs of the State Printing office. Good News if True. Avpurn, Cal., Aug.19.—There is great excitement here over a strike made in the old Marguerite mine near town. The story is that the ledge assays $68,000 a-ton and there is $16,000,000 worth of-ore in’ sight. Must Pay Its Taxes, San Franorsoo, Aug. 19.—Judge McKenna has rendered a decision that the Atlantic and Pacific ) must pay its taxes for 1894. They amount to $56,800, Burt Arrested. wanted in Austin, Texas, for the murder of his wife and two children about a month ago, was arrested in the Rialto + Building to-day. The dirk with which the crime was committed was found on ‘his person, and bloodstains were still viattle on his straw hat. : Dead in Her Room. San Francisco, Aug. 18.—Miss Flora Finlayson, the well-known opera singer, died this morning in her apartments. at the Langham. Hotel. The door of her room was forced open by friends at noon, and lying on the floor was the body of the young woman, who had evidently been dead a number of hours. Heart failure is supposed to be the cause, Boiler Burst. Raueiau, N. C., Aug. 18-—-Low water caused an. explosion of the boiler at Taft’s saw mill at Troy, Montgomery county, yesterday. Five men were instantly killed: Sam Ewing, John Ellis, Ed Dickinson, Charles Morro and James Carpet. Four others were injured, ‘three fatally. A number of workmen were struck by piecea of the boiler and others were scalded. On His Deathbed, Sanatoca, N. Y., Aug. 18.—John F. Chamberlain, well known as the manager of hotels. in Washington and Old Point Oomfort,; who arrived_here three weeks ago, is dying at'the Grand Union Hotel.. His-attending physicans have nohope that he will survive another A Horrible Death. _/ Lovisvinie, Aug. 18.—Eugene Oarsey, aged 13, died a horrible death here yesterday, after suffering for twelve hours. ‘While riding his bicycle on the Shelbyville pike he anda companion were attacked by dogs. The dogs diverted Carsey’s: attention from a sulky recklessly driven by two negroes, who have not yet been identified. Carsey collided with the sulky with such force that he was impaled on the shaft. The negroes threw the bicycle into a . ditch, and ‘then, lifting the unfortunate boy from the sbaft, laid him by the roadside and drove off rapidly. Carsey’s companion, Charles Creighton, ran to a neighboring farmhouse for assistance, and the boy was taken to his home. ~ Soldiers to Fight. Cuba. SENATOR ALLISON'S. YIBWS, Hard Work Ahead, But McKinley Will Carry lowa—It 1s Predicted That Michigan ‘Will Give McKinley 60,000 Majority, = Cuicaco, Aug. 17—Senator Allison came to Republican national headquarters ‘today from the seashore prepared to take an active part in the campaign in his home State and elsewhere. Senator. Burrows arrived from his, Michigan home on a similar mission, havihg been assigned to speak at the opening of the Illinois campaign at Jacksonville this-week. He has already made one speech and after this week the Senator will devote two weeks to addressing the voters of his State. The regular opening of the Michigan campaign by the State Oommittee will be about September 10th. Senator Allison said he would not do much campaign work outside of Iowa, ‘and added: “I shall be very much surprised if we fail to carry Iowa. The general situation is favorable, but there is hard work ahead fomake sure of victory. Ido not anticipate much difficulty on account. of fasion in Iowa. Fusion between Democrats and Populists is no novelty with us, but their united strength has not been enough to wrest the State from the. Republicans. There have been some Republicans led astray by the free silver prophets, but there are also many Iowa Democrats who will vote for McKinley against the fusion tickét. Hard work will convert supe Republican backsilders, and I am going to help to do it.” Senator Burrows said the free sini strength in Michigan was concentrated in the places where greenbackism reigned, and he had much difficulty in getting an admission from prominent Republicans that free silver was gaining ground in any locality. with Mr. Henry Metzenbaugher. Rev. Father Olyne performed the ceremony. Only relatives were present. The bride is a lovely and accomplished young lady, with a host of friends and admirers. Mr. Metzenbaugher is a young man of sterling integrity and fine business ability; having been in business, in this city for several years. Thomas Mooney and Miss Katie Mooney, brother and sister of the bride, stood up with the contracting parties.
