Shot in the Leg Dy One of the Fighters. Last evening avout 6 o’clock two men had a fight at Glen brook Park over the saddle horge race. One of the parties was.from Grass Valley and the. other from this eity. Mat Whelihan of Grass Valley then took a hand and soon a free fight was in progress, six or eight men being in the mix-up. During the melee Wheliban drew a pistol and fired one shot, supposedly for the purpose of scattering. the crowd. The bullet struck George Lammon in the .leg ‘about three inches above the ankle, producing a flesh wound. Lammion ‘was’ @ disinterested bystander. The ‘wound is nota bad one. After the shot was fired there was a mad rush of the crowd to get out of the way, but the fight talk was kept up and Deputy Sheriff Neagle and the two special deputies found it neces‘sary to draw their pistols in order to enforce their authority and quiet the crowd. Soon afterwards a colored jockey aaa another darkey got into.a wrangle over some gambling proposition in which it seems one had got the best of the other. ‘The jockey, drew a dagger and made a lunge at his larger opponent. who ducked and escaped being stabbed. As he tambled over he dropped. some money and exclaimed: “There it is.” He then gathered himself and scaled a fence in a lively manner. The coon who pulled the knife was arrested and brought to the county jail. This morning he was fined $20 and discharged. The other map was arrested today ‘for distarbing the peace and brought to this city for trial. Thunder Storm. The storm purified the atmosphere but did “ot lower the temperature only temporarily. Today has been clear and warm. — For ‘tnaane Peopie. L. H. Brown, Secretary of State, and Dr. Matthews of the Board of Health, who have been here the past two days, came for the purpose of inspecting the county jail and the hospital to see what provisions are made for keeping . insane people in charge. Under the new law crazy. people are to be kept a short time (not exceeding twenty days) by the county, to determine whether their lunacy is but temporary. Many persons are sent to the asylum who would have recovered at home. They foand that there was. no fit place for keeping insane people. The matter “will. be brought to the attention of the. Board of Lunacy and the Supervisors \will probably be instructed to provide ypadded cells in which to confine persons who are charged with insanity. Nothing But Adulterers. & Superior Judge in Los Angeles has recently zendered ‘a decision which will make ‘hastily married couples open their eyes. The other horses in the race were Maud Evans, Lit Latta, Mollie and Carter B. In the stretch back of the knoll Maud Evans was pocketed by two of the other horses und kept there. For this, Miller, the rider of Carter B., was set down, and Ward, rider of Maud Evans, was set down by the judges for using obscene language. All bets and pools on the race were declared off. At the Park this afternoon there was a trotting and pacing race in addition to the. running races. The Superintendent’s race will take place Saturday. They encountered in their tunnel a ledge of quartz that is literally filled with fine gold. The ledge also carries a large percentage of ochre that is rich in gold. Prospects show that the ledge matter will pay the handsome sum of $600 per ton, which is highly elating to the above prospectors and to the owner of the mine, A D. Allan. Hundreds of thousands: of dollars haye been taken from this mine in years past, but of late very little has been heard of the property, which has been worked by tributers. This strike shows that all the rich quartz has not been extracted, and is another proof ofthe general richness of ‘the Nevada City quartz district. There is no need of rushing off to Klondyke when we have. such rich mines right at our very doors, and capitalists who wish to invest in mines can find no better place in the world. 4 00-2 Fire on the Railroad. t Sheriff Getchell telephoned from Colfax this afternoon saying a fite was raging on the Narrow Gauge Railroad tiear Long Ravine bridge, a short distance this side of Colfax.
