Jealing restaurateurs of Newark, in
order to attract and hold a good class
custom, endeavor to make the waitresves look aS neat as possible, and.
wi ti that purpose in view bave stipuJated that the girls must wear a certain number of clean aprons and white

forins the basis of the attack which the
* Wemen’s Municipal Improvement Association is making upon the custom
is : hat it involves too much expense on
the part of the employes. There is no
evidence going to show that the girls
objact to the rule. There is every reason to believe that the people they wait
on are favorable to it. Sou far as it is
possible to judge, the reform movement against clean and attractive waiting maids is only another exhibition of
the latter-day tendency upon the part
of some pegple to meddle with some
o:her people’s business.
A story is going the rounds of a golf
match between the Rev. Dr. Sterret
and Justice Harlan of the United S:ates
Supreme Court. Theincident occurred
at the Chevy Chase Golf Ciub, one of
the prominent organizations near
Washington, during a meeting between
these two ardent golfers. ‘The doctor
discovered his‘ ball teed np in tempticg
style for a fine brussie shot, and, with
the utmost aeliberation, he went
through the preliminary “waggles” and
with a supreme effort—missed the ball
For fully » minute he gazed at the tantalizing sphere without uttering a word

solemnly: “Doctor, that was the most
profane silence I ever listened to.”
There must be a good deal of difference between the rouds of France: and
those of the United States if judged by
the automobile records. In the former country two automobiles ran 226
miies at the rate of twenty-three miles
per hour, beating an expfess train,
wile the automobile which-has started
out to cross this continent ran thirtyfive miles and had-a break down.. It is
twenty days since Davis’ automobile
started from New York Oily, and to
dute it -has traveled only about 500
miles.
There has lately been much speculatioa regarding the origin of the word
“tip.” The truth is that in an old
English taverh a receptacle for small
cvin was fixed in a conspicuous place,
over which appeared in writing, “To
jusure promptness.” Whatever was
placed in the box was divided among
the servants. Other taverns followed
the example, and soon the words were
a’reviated to T. I. P.
‘here must be something in Mr.

Is It Malaria or Alum?
{Popular Science Monthly.)
Languor, loss of appetite, indigestion
and often feverishuess are 1hé Common
symptoms of a physiological cdndition
termed “ntalariu.” Ail these symptoms
may be and frequently are the effect
of the use of alum buking powders in
food ‘making. ‘There is no question
about the poisonous effect of alum
upon the system. It obstructs digestion, prostrates the nerves, coagulates
been niade clear, thanks to physicians,
boards of health,and food commissions.
So “highly. injurious to the health of
the community” does the eniinent
head of the University of Pennsylvania,
Dr. Barker, consider ‘the alum baking
powders, that he = says
should be prohibited by law.”
Under these circumstances it is worth
the while of every housewife to employ the very littlecare that is necessary to keep so daugerous an element
from the food of her family.
A pure cream of tartar baking
powder, which is the only kind that
should be used, ought to cost about
forty-five to fifty cents a pound. Therefore, if you are paying much less, something is wrong; if you are paying
twenty-five cents or less per pound,
the powder is ceeainlt made from
alam.
Always bear thine iiaple facts in
mind when purchasing bukiug powder.
