MELONS FOR Ti BIRDS. —e A Peddler Destroys An Entire Load on : the Public” Highway. An enterprising teamster who resides in the vicinity of Oroville and upon whose hands tim@-evidently hangs heavier than a good many other things left that valley town yesterday morning with a load oi melons for this city. This same fruit is selling in Oroville at 40 cents per dozen ‘melons and the teamster thought he saw a good chance for speculation by making up a load and coming to Grass-Valley and this city, where he supposed a ready market would be found in which to unload his cargo. Two wagons and six horses ‘were pressed into service for the trip, but like all enterprises started on a prodigious scale numerous bstacles had to be overcome and the first one of these was encountered at the Union ranch this side of Smartsville, when the hind axle of the back-action -broke. Not in the least daunted by the mishap he made his way back to Smarisville, where he had the break repaired preparatory to continuing his journey. After proceeding about two miles in advance of where the first break occurred his trip was again impeded by the breaking of the front axle of the other wagon. This was too much of a bad thing and he who had endeavored to persevere through © difficulties knew it, and at once began to give vent to his thoughts in the only way 4 person will under the circumstances, He cursed the . yoads and he cursed the material of which the wagon was constructed, and then he heaped anathema after anathema upon the head of the man who planted the first watermelon seed. His mind having been relieved in what he considered the proper way and the wreck surveyed he remounted the wagon and made an onslaught on the contents. He tossed melon after melon into the road as a schoolboy wonld toss apples to a circus elephant, with considerable more force however, A stage ‘driver happening along asked permission to have one, but was shut off with the rather sharp rejoinder of ‘‘not town, day. day. urday. the morning train. The Nevada Rustler says: If you find some mistakes in these. columns, just kick, kick until you breathe easier. Then remember that we have the entire work of this office to do, gather ‘the local news, listen to every bit of gossip in the community, shake hands with every one, puff this one and that one, get bored for an hour or two by some one who will pay you in a few days, who wants you to run the paper to please him, And then post the books, set down and make out bills you never expect will be paid, write copy, set type, and then go over to Cohn’s and cat a handful of dried apples washed down with water that has seen its best days, and imagine we have just eaten a hearty supper. D—— a man that won't kick. << Enthuse!
