. F. Schuldt of Company 0 has’
been appointed clerk to the Lientenant Colonel and acting Adjutant General of the brigade, and is at headquarters at Camp Budd, Santa Oruz, continually. Hedoes not drill with the
company. but is kept busy writing out
orders and keeping the roster of the
camp. Company C has received most
of the honors in being called upon
fcom all the head officers for numerous men to fill the different positions
at headquarters.
The Second Infantry held a target
shoot yesterday. Company © made
the best score. Today the Sixth Infantry held their target practice. According to the orders issued from
headquarters the infantry remaining
in camp furnishes from its guard sufficient detail to guard the camp during
the absence of the other regiment at
target practice.
The baseball game betwabin members
of Company © and a nine from Company E resulted in a victory for the
latter by a score of 18 to 11. e
A letter received from the camp says
that everything is quiet there and that
everybody is having a good time. ‘The
discipline is strict, but all‘ are getting
nsed to the rules and like it.

at camp and especially with the lady
visitors. He is held in high regard by
his superior officers, and his company
is spoken. of as one of the best drilled
in the regiment. .

A Young Lady Badly Burned.
San Francisco, August 20—Maggie .
Gouderslatt, aged 19 years, narrowly .
escaped being burned to death last
night, and only saved herself by plunging into a water trough. She is a
domestic, employed at 179 Noe street,
and was beating turpentine and oil for
@ liniment over a gas jet. The liquid
Lignited and in her fright she spill it
upon her clothes, which were ablaze in
a'moment. She rushed into the street
and seeing a water trough in front of a
grocery store plunged into -it and
rolled around until the flames were extinguished. She was severely burned,
bat may recover.
Indicted For Murder,San Jose, August 20—The Grand
Jury of Santa Clara county has in‘dicted Mrs. Sarah Schofield and Dan
Dutcher for the murder of George M.
Schofield. In an interview Mrg. Schofield said that a short time ago Schofield. proposed to her to have their
‘house insured for $700 and burn it
down and with the money go to Klondyke.

San SEBAsTIAN, August 20.—Michael
Angelino Golli, who shot and killed
Premier Canovas, was executed today
at 11 a. m, in compliance with the
sentence imposed Monday.
Death From a Peculiar Cause,
Wiomira, Kansas, August 20.—O. O.
Simmons, a real estate broker, died today from the effects of swallowing a
plate containing three false teeth three
years ago. The post mortem showed
that the teeth were still lodged in the
esophagus. Simmons had to live on
liquid food, and finally his stomach
rebelled and he virtually starved to
to death.

Reppine, August 20.—Mart Gavin
started for Coffee Creek Tuesday. He
reached the Tower House, 18 miles
from here, at noon and résolved to try

Santa Onvz, Oal., August 20. —At the
Plyler trial yesterday, Dr. Welch of
San Jose testified that the prisoner
tried to engage him to perform an operation on Charles Harris, but that he
refused. Plyler said that he did not
want to murder Harris, but only to
maim him. Subsequently he told the
'witness that the operation had been
performed.
Typhus Fever in Silesia.
Burm, August 20.—The greater part
of Silesia has been visited by severe
storms and several persons have been
killed by lightning. Typhas fever is
rampant at Rogan in consequence of .
the water used for drinking there having become infected by the réfuse accumulated by the floods.

Found Dead in Bed.
Hontineton, Pa., August 20.—Rev.
H. J. Houghton, for two years past rector of St: James Episcopal Church here,
and of the Episcopal Church of Tyrone,
Pennsylvania, was found dead in bed
yesterday at his residence. Rev.
Houghton was a native of Salt Lake
City, Utah.
Crushed to Death,
Strooxton, August 20.—Peter Battilana, the 8-year-old son of John Battilana, an employe of the Stockton
Woolen Mill, was crushed to death unday at the corner of Center and Jack‘gon streets, while trying to climb between two wagons.

Collinsworth, of Clayborne county,

starving herself to death under a vow.
She quarreled with her husband, they
separated, and she vowed she would
fast until he returned to her. Efforts
of friends and relatives to get her to
eat have been of no avail. _
