J. Judd Injured
‘Biceauast0, Kasse’ 19.—An explo‘sion took place « little after 2 o’clook
this afternoon in the basement of the
. bullding located at 609 K street and
which is occupied by the flrearns and
sporting goods store of W. H. Hokhardt, in which Joseph Judd was badly injured and Barchell Upson scorched. The men were engaged in removing the powder and bullets from three
boxes of rifle shells when the accident
occurred, and it is presumed the frioction from digging into the shells
caused the explosion, It is estimated
that half a keg of powder went off.

that every year the people of France pay on the

French products; and he suggests that the heavy and almost prohibitive Tariff which we impose on French products should be considerably lightened in the interest. of
mutual advantage and good will.
The Frenchman was sly, and a spark of humor is not
lacking in his remarks. For if we recall that the popuation of the United States is double that of France, it is
evident that he made twice as much out of his statement
as the facts justify. If we recall further, that the products
of the United States, taken by France are all absolute
essentials, being chiefly food, oil and tobacco, we will realize
that it is not a matter of good will that induces the purchases
bat the compelling power of necessity. ‘On the other hand,
if we note the imports to this country from France, we-see
that they comprise largely wines and liquors, silks, laces and
