The Frenchman was sly, and a spark of humor is not lacking in his remarks. For if we recall that the popuation of the United States is double that of France, it is evident that he made twice as much out of his statement as the facts justify. If we recall further, that the products of the United States, taken by France are all absolute essentials, being chiefly food, oil and tobacco, we will realize that it is not a matter of good will that induces the purchases bat the compelling power of necessity. ‘On the other hand, if we note the imports to this country from France, we-see that they comprise largely wines and liquors, silks, laces and national cup race. : “The course of the first race was fixed for fifteen sietlcad miles. to windward or leeward and return. crossed the line one minute after eleven a. m. tremendous rainfall obscured the yachts. yachts were drifting side by side mney: rain and little wind, a, 12:30—Wind has changed.
