An attempt was made to wreck the weatbound overland train (No. 2) due at Colfax shortly before midnight last night, by unknown persons who removed the fish-plates Nevada Cliv, Nevada County, Calif. C.C, Eaton of San Francisco came-down on the Bloomfield stage. : John Kriess of Auburn arrived here last night to see his father, who is very sick. 8. P. Williams of Antioch aarived here last evening on his way to Dewnieville. C. M. Bonnemort of Oakland arrived here this morning from Graniteville on his way home, Dr. Burleigh returned last night from Forest City, where he has been on business. Wm. Buck of Moore's Flat came down last evening on his way below. Dr. Du Millieu and family came up frotn Colfax last evening on their way to Bloom field, Mrs, M. F. Sedgwick and’ children came down from San Juan last evening on their way below. Oe Miss Mollie Gilbert.of North San Juan arrived here last evening from San Francisco on her way home. Oscar Coflin came up from Grass Valley last night and left on the stage-this morning for the Empire mine, Richard Jones, Miss Mary Tennigs and Mrs. B. Murphy came down from Wasbington today, and will remain a few day» on a visit to friends. Ned Cassel, who has been here for the past month on a visit to his sister, Mrs. L. Fare, Grass Valley, = Fare, Nevada City, -cellent scenery an brooke, Pacific an aud most of the spikes from some of the rails at a point near Cape Horn. ‘The trackwalker came along as they had their devilish work nearly completed, and they ran away. When he discovered what had been done he telephoned for a force of section hands and warned the approaching train of the danger. It took some time to repair the track and the train was considerably delayed in consequence. The regular soldiers on guard at Colfax and vicinity were recently withdrawn, but it is anticipated that they will now be recalled. 2 Many Mining Men. There was an unusually large number of mining men from Grass Valley and vicinity on our streets teday. They were attending the case of N. W. Coombs vs, James Hague, which is going on in the Superior Court. ae Going to Grass Valley. A large delegation of the Masons of this city will pay an official visit to the lodge at Grass Valley tonight. They go down to confer the Master Mason Degree upon a number of the members at that city. _— —-—-2~@e-e — Not Strong. It is quite evident that the Populists will not cut much of a figure in this township during the coming election. They have done some lively work to obtain signatures to their club roll andhave only succeeded in getting about sixty names so far out o/ about fifteen hundred voters, ~ee Dr. J. H.
