Stocker, of Bath, now have their bed rock tunnel in 375 feet. ‘They expect this winter to strike the ledge in the old Hancock & Watson quartz mine -about 450 feet below the old works. Sheridan & McKinstry are at work on the North Star quartz mine on the Sheridan ranch. They are sluicing along the ledge and have taken out about 43000 during the past year, some pieces of quartz .yielding as much as $250.. The ledge improves as.they go down. I. T. Mr. Englebright is a very zealous Republican, is able and energetic, and will prove a useful member of the com. mittee. Major. McBride resigned for the reason that he had not the time to attend to the duties devolving upon the county member of the State Committee. = ec ¢ Be Good Tomorrow. Everybody should make an attempt, if only on the surface, to be good tomorrow by attending divine service. We have here every Christian denomination, suited to the various beliefs of the people. From and after the word message by telegraph between this city and Sari Francisco will be 25 cents. The smallest charge for telephoning from here to San Francisco is. 75.cents, which, in case no answer is required, is three times as expensive as the telegraph will be ina short time. Ifthe Telephone Company maintains the present rate the Telegraph Company will get erable business that otherwise would go by telephone. Since writing the above we notice in manager of the Sunset Company in ‘San Francisco, in which the latter expresses the belief that’ the cut in rates made by the Telegraph Company will be met. by the Telephone Company. He said that thé Western. Union and the Telephone Company didnot enter. into direct competition. The written message transmitted over the wire was usually the announcement of a definite proposition. ‘The conversation conducted through the medium of the telephone frequently. related to matters'of negotiation. In the telephone business the company is not. bound by telegraph service. Uusually the persons. conducting the conversation know each other’s voice. What is said in the conversation over the wire is known only to the personstalking. When the parties are connected the responsibility of the company ends. Manager Glass also gave some other information regarding the telephone business that may be interesting to many of our readers. He said: “We have during the past~ two. years expended $700,000 on territorial extension outside of cities and towns. Between this city and San Jose we have fourteen pairs of wires. We have two complete loops to Los Angeles and four loops from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. The greater the distance is the heavier the copper wire must be, With copper wire of sufficient weight and San Francisco could be maintained. It is now conducted directly between Portland, Me., and Minneapolis, a distonce of 1500 or 1600 miles.” The wire used between San Francisco and Los Angeles weighs 520 pounds to the mile. The poles, placed fifty to the mile, cost about $20 each. The Wire is worth 1614 cents a pound. The cost ofsetting -the poles, etc, brings up the total cost. of sonsteno: . tion per mile to $1500. The life of a $20! pole is from ten to twelve years. An Inconsistent Part. Sani Jose Mercury: The Democratic party in this State presents the queer anomaly of having selected a sound money State Committee to conduct a campaign for free silver. Under the circumstances, the sincerity of the party in its avowals of loyalty to the cause: of free silver is much to be doubted. What would be thought, for example, of a party which professes to believe in protection should it select as its managers men who are notoriously advocates of free trade? It.is not surprising that a prominent silver_organ like the Stockton “Mail” should declare that the silver party men—meaning thereby the silver element of the Democratic party—are suspicious of the personnel of the Democratic State Committee. : : Gone Below. W.F. Prisk, a member of the Democratic State Central Committee, left for San Francisco last night in response to a call of the general committee. The Populists, Democrats and Silver men have agreed to fuse, giving the Democrats five electors for Bryan! and Sewall, and the Populists four ton Bryan and Watson. The ts four for committee will meet to officially agree to the above apportionment. For the past two weeks a crew of men have been at work at the Electric Power Company’s dam on the South Yuba river above the Purdon crossing. ‘The dam is being in hight and improved in other respects. Men are also at work boarding up the big flume to its full hight. Heretofore it has been boarded to a hight of four féet, while the uprights that the boards are fastened to are five feet high. This work will be done the entire length of the flame—over three miles—and will greatly increase its strength and carrying capacity. Considerable lumber is required to make the improvements spoken of, and teams have been haul hauling for several days yet. What the Power Company’s object is in enlarging the dam and increasing the capacity of the flame we have-not gers think it advisable to have things fixed so that they can catch more water and convey it to their power house if needed. Their business is ‘gradually increasing, although as yet it is not necessary to use but:one of their large dynamos to fill their contracts for plant is running at the Gold Hill mine below Grass Valley, and at the Allison Ranch, it may be necessary to start the other dynamo, but there has been sufficient water all along to run both if needed.
