The Mineral Cup.
Epiror Transcript—Permit me the use
of your columns to, make a suggestion to the
Directors of our Fair Association—a suggestion which I am sure they will be glad to
act upon and which I am sure will be heartily seconded by our, citizens generally.
I am informed thatthe Chronicle mineral cup and the gold medal awarded to
Nevada county for the best mineral display
at the Midwinter Fair are now in Grass
Valley. Let the Directors of the Fair bring
them up here and one evening next week
formally present them at the Pavilion te
the County Supervisors who are the proper
custodians of them. Then let the prizes be
exhibited at the Pavilion till the Fair closes,
giving the thousands of Nevada county people who assisted by furnishing votes and
exhibits to get a square look at their property. The night of the presentation would
be ¢ jubilee occasion that would attract. an
unusually large crowd of: people to the
Pavilion. Couvon Fisnp,
They Will Not Be Recognizable.
Hon. Chas. F, McGlashan, the young
man eloquent, and , of rockitig-stone fame,
of Truckee, wil] deliver the address at the
Agricultural Fair next week. There will
be an immense crowd there to listen to him,
and it will be worth coming miles to hear.
He will not dilate on potatoes, cabbages,
and other things that go to make up a cornbeef dinner, but will give a genuine spreadeagle speech. If he should happen to ex‘tend his remarks to the things of the vegetable kingdom they will be apt to be so
buried up that the articles will not be eas=
ily recognized by the common fold.

Who pitronize papers should pay promptly.
Pecuniary-prospects-of-the-press-have pecu=
liar power in pushing forward public _prosperity. If the printer is paid promptly and
his pocket book kept plethoric by promptly
paying patrons he puts his pen to the paper
in peace; he paints pictures of passing events
in a more pleasant color, and the perusal of
his paper is a pleasure to people. Paste this
piece of proverbial philosophy in some place
where all persons can see it plainly.

Gocd Roads Appreciated.
There is no better evidence that good
roads are appreciated in this part of the
country than by the:number of vehicles
which traverse the Grass Valley road daily,
Since that thoroughfare was put in good
condition the travel upon it has been imroad and the people are-not slow to avail
themselves of the opportunity, for every
evening dozens of people may be seen‘riding
to Grass Valley and back for no other reason than the pleasure of the trip, It is the
most traveled thoroughfare in the county
and its good condition should be maintained
during al] time.

The moonlight dance, given by the
‘‘Moon Gazers” of Sebastopol Friday evening, was a decided success. At 9:30 o'clock
the grand march commenced, and until 3
o’clock in the morning over thirty couple
strains of music wafted
on the night air by the San Juan orchestra,
Much credit is due Miss Ferguson for
courtesies shown the guests that evening.
Who says the mountains are dead? Mr,
Baker of San Juan has purchased a_half interest in the Boss mine, owned by Wright
and Crane, and will erect two Huntington
mills immediately. Success to you Baker.
Our town presents a lively appearance
this week. Many hay teams are arriving
from the valleys and upwards of twenty
tons of hay and grain have been sold in San
Juan by the farmers. They come in with
hay and grain raised on slickens land and
depart with their pockets filled with gold,
What does Obleyer say to this? R. R. H.
New Houses,
Gold-Flat-is-at present enjoying quite a
boom in house building and a number of
new buildings have recently been erected
in that vitinity. Three new houses are now
in the course of construction and more ‘are
to follow. Many people who remove to
new sections of a ceuntry prefer to live a
short distance from town, where they can
raise vegetables and fruit and keep a few
cows for home use; and if they cannot obtain houses in such a district they will readily build them. Gold Flat is just a place.

Last Tuesday evening as J. M. Buffington

Sugar-Pine Lumber.
Large quantities of sugar-pine lumber are
being hauled to this city and points below
here from Sierra county. Put Carter, tean.ster for the lumber mill of Cole & King in
that county, has arrived with loads of lumber as often as twicea week. The reason
why our people sendaway from home for
their lumber when there are so many lumber
firms in our own county is a mystery to us,
of the tax rate in their respective counties . !

off of the axle. A search’was made for the. the Superior Court today, Hon. John CaldThe young man’s mind has_become unbalanced lately, and a close watch
has been kept on him to prevent him from
doing anything desperate. On last Tuesday
during the afternoon, while his brother
was attending to something in another part
of the house, Yore obtained Possession of
a loaded rifle which was kept in the house.
His sister was standing in the front door
of the house facing the road at the time, and
when the insane man caught sight of her
he raised the gun and fired. His aim
was a trifle wild ¢ndthe bullet, instead of
‘striking the lady, pierced the wall a few
inches to her right, and passing through
lodged in the watering tank on the outside,
Immediately upon hearing the shooting
the crazy man’s brother rushed in and the
would-be murderer escaped to the woods.
He remained in the woods during the night
and on Wednesday morning W. R. Forbes,
the well known foundry man of Downieville, who is a brother-in-law of the Yore
boys, was sent for at Marysville, Yore
was induced to return to the house yesterday forenoon. Arrangements will be made
to try and-take the mau below.
$85 Ore at the Clarke Mine.
Joseph Floyd'& Co., who have for a short
time past been working the Cal. R. Clarke
mine near the old Half Mile Honse, have
about thirty tons of ore cn the dump. The
Pioneer Reduction Company has offered
them $60 a ton for it at the mine, but they
refused to sell as they are confident it will
yield at least $85 a ton. Of course they can
hau] and work it for considerably less than
$25 a ton. The ledge is not large, but is
clearly defined. The present working is at
a depth of about 100 feet on the incline, and
there is much water to contend with.

A WILD GOOSE CHASE
which as a matter of fact is ae under your hand is a most. unreasAfter wmeting
onable waste of energy. In NEVADA CITY, Oley and Confectionery mean
the same thing. It may be added, however, that when you say “‘FOLEY,” you mean
Confectionery of the highest quality and not something which is merely an apology for
candy and passes on @ pinch, as it were, You can’t beat m candies anywhere on the
Pacific Coast, and it would require something very like a wild goose chase to find anything that would equal them.
