Ohe Vast Amount Paid to the Country's Defenders. That Uncle Sam is taking care of his old soldiers and. their dependents is simply proven by a glance at the figures paid for pensions every year and the remarkable manner at which these figures have increased each year since the Administration of President Grant. Tne number of pensioners on the rolls up to the 30th of Jane ig 997,787, an increase ‘of 4206 in a year. A voniparative table shows that the roll for the year juet closed is the “high water mark” in the history of the pension bared, the next: highest having beén reachéd in.1898. Of the gains to the rolle during the year, 3849 were from the war with Spain. The losses included two from the revolution, 215 from the war of 1812, 826 from the wer with Mexico, and 544 from the Indian wars. The gains to the roll since 1898 were 18,384 widows of the civil war and 5604 from the Spanish war—total, 18898.
