Glenbrook Park yesterday was the scene of as happy a'throng as had ever gathered together in Nevada dounty,. The day was almost perfect pr of Washington, al Neral tar such an event, and every one enteréd-into the spirit of the occasion, Thousands partook of the hospitality of ‘Nevada county, and the picnic, campstew and barbecue was a. great success: Everyorie laid their business cares aside, and the miners and artisans cast down their tools and went to the Parle fora day of rest ead resrea= tion, .The farmers were there with their families, and enjoyed themeelves to the utmost, That it was a grand affair would be drawing it mild, and not an accident or disturbance occurred to mar the tranquility of the day. The visitors from the East and other places were surprised. that such a large throng could be so orderly, and freely ex. pressed their admiration. The reception committee took especial pains that every attention should be paid the guests, and in after years they will picnic of August 22d, 1902, in Nevada county. All afternoon the cars from both Grass Valley’ and Nevada City were crowded, and the procession to the gates of the Park seemed almost endless. The picnic grounds were crowded, and overfiowed into the park beyond. Several: families brought their dinner in baskets and grouped beneath the shade of the trees, while the majority waited for the camp stew and barbecue later in the day, The bands from Nevada @ity and ‘Grass Valley played throughout the day, and the music was much enjoyed. The dance platform was one of the favorite resorts, and those who delight in dancing, were highly pleased with the entrancing strains. When the beginnifig of the sports were announced, the crowd hurried over tothatrack. W.H. Bray of Nevada.City, Dr. E Jamieson and L. J, Rowe of Grass Valley, officiated as judges, and E. J. Baker announced the events, : "Phe-100-yard dash, free-for-all, ywaswon by C. Moore of Gras; Valley. Miss Laura Sandow of Town Talk, captured the prize in the giri’s race. When the fat man’s race was anpounced, the crowd waited with bated breath. Sam Rice, L. Hyman, Henry Daniels and L. Hyman toed the mark, and were started without a hitch. Sam Rice won handily and established a-record for heavy weighte. The relay ball throwing: contest was between Clarence O’Connor, Hocking, Chartes O’Connor and Spargo of the Nevada City baseball team, and the . ball crossed the line in fifteen seconds. They bad no opponents.’ The twenty-mile relay race, between . ’ members of the California Cycling Ciub, was the event of the day. At the end of the fifteenth mile the race was ended owing to the lateness of the hour, and the desire to hear the address of Mayor Schmitz of San’ Francisco, The time for the fifteen mifes was 53:18. ? Fred Searls, ag master of ceremonies, then addressed the assemblage, welcoming the visitors to the county, the picnic and the sister cities. He then introduced Judge Trask of Los Angeles, who was received with applauee, His remarks were interspersed with wit and humor. He expressed his wonder at the remarkable display Nevada county had made at San Francisco, and of the still more wonderful things he had seen since €oming here. At the close he was loudly applauded. When Mr. Searls introduced Mayor Schmitz, there was a thunderous applause. Mr, Schmitz epoke of his hearty reception in the county, adding that he has been more and more delighted with ‘the open-hearted. hospitality extended him.’ He heard >of it before, but never knew what it really meant. The marvelous resources of the countybad been a revelation to him,and he was surprised that Nevada county bad not made them known to the world long ago. He predicted that visitors from the East inthe future, would not pass Nevada county by, as they had-in the past. As the distinguished gentleman-coneluded bis address, the applause was deafening. A five-mile tandem race was. then announced between Dott and Frieden enberg of San Francisco, and Granville and Black of Nevada City. The local men were ahead at the end of the first . two miles, but then the San Francisco boys struck out,and when the Nevada boys had gone four miles dnd a quarter they gave up, the Frisco boys being fully half a mile in the lead. The five miles were made in seventeen mirutes flat. The game of baseball between, the Nevadas and Grass Valleys was won by the Grass Valley by “a score of 10. to 3. *A-half-mile running race was won by P. Solari’s horse.
