URING the past three months boys of tender years have slain their fathers, each time on the pretext of defending their mothers from paternal violence. In each case the men slain were dissipated and violent, with the reputation of ill-using their families. It may therefore be said that they deserved their fate.. Perhaps; but do not these shocking tragedies have a most deleterious effect on} society? Parricide is an awful crime. Can the killing of parents by children ever be justified on moral grounds, even though legally justifiable? Is it true that continued abuse and violent attempts on life at the hands of dissolute and unworthy parents are hard to bear, often call for strenuous resistance, but the slaying of the parent is so unnatural, so abhorrent to the seutiment of civilized mankind, which clothes even the infirmities of the father and mother with respect, that it can scarcely be regarded as a condonable offense. We may pity the person who is placed in such extremity by parental ill usage, and sympathize with the misfortune of those who are forced to see one parent. slain or slay the other; yet the act of parricide itself can never be regarded with any other sentiment than a feeling of horror and reprobation. The safety of society and the construction of the family makes this imperative. Yet society owes some duties to itself and especially to children placed at the mercy of drunken, violent wretches, in this matter. Better protection should be afforded to the offspring of unnatural parents, although to provide it presents a question of the greatest nicety. Proper moral training is urgent for many of the evils which attend the domestic life of families ill-constituted, dissolute or irresponsible. But how is it to be applied? Moral training reaches everywhere else without touching the point of infection. It does not get into the family where it is most needed. Iua moral, God-fearing community, there may be one family debased by drink, improvidence, incontinence, or by other causes, Children are reared under such conditions as to deprive them of all respect for one or both parents, while they are made to feel the taunts and derision of other children; who visit the sins of the father on the son with the'. thoughtless brutality peculiar to childhood. Out of this condition grows an awful tragedy, its most fearful phase being the self-approval of the patricide. Public opinion should exert itself to frown down condonation for the killing of parents. The ancient Greeks regarded the patricide as the most dreadful of all crimes. Even when involuntary it called for the severest punishment. Two of the most powerful of the ancient Greek tragedies had for dts subject the punishment due to those guilty of parentslaying. In one case Clytemnestra richly deserved her fate, and in the other Edipus committed his crime unwillingly and in self defense. Yet the Greeks regarded the offense as unforgivable. The sentiment which prompted this harsh judgment is the very foundation stone of civilization. It must not be broken or the family as the unit of society will perish. Mre. Two hundred and twenty-eight delegates signed the roll. It is claimed that two hundred more have given their pledge to support Neff. This will make thirteen more than enough to elect him Chairman of the Convention. Metcalf supporters still.claim four hundred and thirty-one votes. Both sides are figuring closely, and claiming victory for their candidate. SACRAMENTO, August 25—The Republican State Convention was called to order at -:15 o’clock this afternoon by Colonel George Stone, Chairman of ‘the Republican State Committee. After) the prayer had been offered, the band played “There Will be a Hot Time.” A speech of welcome was made by Mayor George Clark. There was loud and long cheering for President Roosevelt and Governor Gage, Metcalf and Neff were nominated for Chairman. Neff was nominated by Davis of Amador, and seconded by the Los Angeles delegation. Balloting was then commenced, Neff receiving 423% votes, and Metcalf 406%. When Neff took the chair, he received a grand ovation. The convention then adjourned until evening. @a @eaeaeeaeenaneea __. Prrtspure, Pa., August 25.—There was serious trouble. to-day in the strike region. August Scheutz, a special policeman at Hazelton, was fatally stabbed while attempting to rescue his son from a mb of 3000 strikers. ‘he trouble was precipitated by an effort to resume work in Colliery No. 4o, in Lehigh Valley, two hundred and fifty non-union men having been secured for this purpose. . The serious trouble which followed, however, prevented the opening of the colliery, George Wheatley, foreman of the Brookside colliery at Pottsville, is under arrest and charged with the shooting of George Searer, last night. Wheatley became enraged at the jeering crowd and fired a bullet into the mob, which struck Searer. ~ It is reported that the resumption of work at Cranberry Colliery, near Hazelton, has caused a great crowd to gather. No attempt to start work has yet been made. Nell Recelves 423 1-2 Voles-+-Melcall 406 1-2. Great Enthusiasm Manifested and Gage and .
