Pow fee eee BQ@etiagc*”™: — 8 . ’ it~ “note how persistenti Nevada City Daily [rat Script. VOL. LXVI-<NO. 10368 NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, MONDAY EVENING,.AUGUST 27, 1894, Established Sept.6, 1860, by N. P. Browfi& Co. SUPERVISORS; J.M, BUFFINGTON, D. McPHETRES, . F.M_PRIDGEON,_ T.J. ROBINSON, E. W. DONNELLY. t mY BIG STORIES, NOT’ WINNINGS. Exaggerated Reports of Amounts Lost and Won at the Race Track, One reason for the great popularity of racing among men who know nothing about the sport is the extraordinary for. tunes which people are. supposed. to make in the course of 15 or 20 minutes ‘by betting on horses which have a long price marked opposite theirnames. The racing editors of several of the morning papers are exceedingly careful in noting the winnings and losses of prominent men on the turf when they are worthy of comment, but this is not true of all the men who sit in the reporters’ stand at the tracks. Every year some particular man is picked ont, and the stories of his winnings are mentioned day after day quite. as a matter of course, but never with . any. realnotion-of the actual facts of the. case. McCafferty, for instance, is commonly credited by the papers with having landed between $50,000 and $60,000 on a singte race this week, and afew days before it was solemnly announced in the papers that ‘‘Pittsburg Phil’ had a rather bad two days’ racing, but having landed $55,000 on Candelabra he was feeling more comfortable. : Such winnings as these are noted usually as a matter of course in the shape of a footnote or some small item of news of the track. The inconsistency of these statements is apparent sometimes, even to people who have no knowledge of racing. When McCafferty rode Rough and Ready, for instance, the price was 50 to 1, and it was stated that McCafferty. bet $5,000 of his own and his partner’s money on his mount. Of course it would be impossible to place such an enormous um of money on an outside horse, as ‘thes-bookmakers~are~too~-sharp~ to” be caught napping that way. But, assuming that the story is true and that McCafferty had bet. that amount of money, his winnings would have amounted to $250,000 on that particular race. People who imagine that the bookmakers at Sheepshead Bay can ‘pay out $250,000 on a single overnight race have a lofty opinion of the financial stability of the ring. It is curious to this exaggeration is practiced, since it is apparent to all racegoers that such enormous winnings are’ entirely ,imaginary.—New York Sun. Ae A BABY 'WITHOUT EYES. it Has Two More Fingers, However, Than Are Generally Given to Little Girls. A-wonderful bit of humanity has taken up its abode at 154 Orchard street. This little girl baby was born on Satur. day without eyes or optic nerve. As if this unfortunate condition of affairs was not enough, the baby is afflicted with more fingers than is uspally given to-mankind, From the little finger of each hand is an extra finger of perfect shape and size, and excepting that it points in an opposite direction to the other fingers is apparently formed to remain for a lifetime. In all other respects the little girl is healthy, weighs eight pounds and is as pretty and well behaved a child as could be found anywhere. Its parents, Mr. and Mrs. Juda Grossman, live on the third floor at 154 Orchard street. This is the eighth year of their married life, and during that time three children have been. born, who have all died. The eyeless infant was examined in the Post Graduate Medical hospital yesterday by Drs. F. F. Reyling and Charles A. Tama before a class of 50 students. It was conclusively proved that* the child has no sight whatever, the cause being the arrest of development before birth. Dr. Lander, who is attending the child, has been searching old medical manuscripts for records of similar cases, but the only success he has met with was the finding of a mers mention in an old French natural history by Bruneau of a case where a male child was born without eyes.—New easily got into bad habits as well as eating or healthy body has of sleep, it anTFICE—TILLEY BUILDING, COR.
