eel is called by’ ‘eiiellaaale VisaSalog, which means cup. The legwhich purports to give the derivaPs this name dates back to the’
é when the monkeys and. parrots,
spot where the ge
year and where food was vase plen: .
ty. They took a cup of water to prove
their find nnd went back to their companions, wlio journeyed to the water
and: called the place: Salog, or cup.
When: the babes adopted by the monkeys after the slaughter‘at Iloilo grew
up and’ possessed the land, they retained the name.
Lyncod in Visayan means “sit down.”
The town of Lyncod, thirty. miles from
Iloilo, is:said to have received its name
because the first settlers. were climbing
the mountain when they became tired
and said, “Let us sit down.”. They. sat
down where the town now stands and
found the place so agreeable that ba
remained ad built the town.
The Eyes of a Bee. = =
Every bee has two kinds of eyes—
the two large compound ones, looking
.} dike. hemispheres on either side, and
the three simple ones which crown the
top of his head, Each compound. eye
is composed of 8,500 facets—that is to
Bay, an object is reflected 8,500 times
on its--surface, Every one of these
facets is the base of an inverted hexagonal pyramid, whose apex is fitted to
the head, Each pyramid may be term. . .
ed an eye, for each has its own iris and
optic nerve.
How these insects manage » this marvelous: number of eyes is not yet
known. They are immovable, but mobility is. unn because of the
range of vision afforded by the position
and the number of facets. They have
no Hds, but are protected from dust
and injury by rows of hairs growing
along the lines-at the junctions of the
facets. The simple eyes are supposed .
to have been given the bee to enuble
it to see above its head when. intent
. , upon gathering honey from the cups of
. flowers. Probably this may be one
reason, but it is likely there are other
uses for them not yet ascertained.—

Physical Courage In Battle,
“Physical courage in battle,” sald an
old veteran, “is simply this: Your sense
of duty or your sense of shame is so
strong that you can’t run away. All
this talk about men liking the roar of
battle is nine-tenths rubbish. . Nobody

“IT never knew: but one man who
seemed as if he really relished fighting, and that was General Reynolds,
who precipitated the battle of Gettysburg aud lost his life In so doing. It
was just Nike him to bring. on an en“gagement, Reynolds was always keyed
up very high in action. He. would
shout and encourage bis men and
pluiige--reecktesely forward in--a-—-bigh
state of exaltation, as if he were engrossed with some very exciting game
which he enjoyed playing. Other generals I have observed were cool, collected and impassive In action, but]

Grammar and the Lord’s Prayes. °
A party of gentlemen were discussIng literary subjects when one. asked
another to point out the grammatical
blunder in the Lord’s Prayer. Half a
dozen tried; sone thought it lay in the
words “which art in heaven;’ others
placed it elsewhere, but not one detected it in. the expression, ‘For thine
is the kingdom, the power and the
glory.”
word “is” should be “are,” but people
have used it in the present form so
long that they never think of regarding
it as a blunder, There are teachers
who say such an expression is right because it sounds right, but reverse it
and say, “The kingdom, the power and
the glory is thine,” and the fault is
soon perceived.
