Everything ie progreseing favorably at the Uniqn ‘Blue Gravel mine at North Bloomfield, and the long tunnel is nearing completion, Superintendjent A. D. Gatsuway started to open up this mine the Ist of last September, and has rushed the work ahead in a manner that reflects great credit upon his management. Mr. Gassawaey estimated \hat in 5000 feet the channel ‘would be tapped so thai pay gravei could be taken out: He caleulated that it would take about a year to c mplete the tunnel. He sunk a-shaft 173 feet in depth and run a tunnel 2500 feet in lengthtoward the channel, from the shaft, and struck the gravel, which was just coming in, at a triangle. Another tunnel was run from the creek toward the shaft, and it was reached in 1950 feet, ae ee a continuous tunnel of 4450 feet. The work was delayed somewhat by bumerous g'anite bowiders encountered, which had to be blasted. In about 500 feet it is expected that the pay gravel will be reached, and the cOmpany rewarded for their large outlay. Forty or fifty men are at preseut employed inthis mine. A steam locomotive weighing 15,000 pounds, attaehed to five cars, haulathe dirt out of the tunnel, but it is capable of hauling 40 or 50 cars. Englebright has just retarned from Little Bear Valley, and reports that a ten fnot ledge has been struck in the Zeibricht mine st that place, of which Fred Zeitler and Mr. Engle+ bright are the principal owners, The mountain into which the company bas run the tannel is one thousand feet high, and will furnish excellent backs. At first the ledge was two feet in ‘thickness, bui it bas graduaii? grown larger until it is.now ten feet in the face of the tunnel. Mr: Englebright brought down samples of ore from the mine which were assayed today, and gave areturn of $75 to the ton. At present but four men are employed, bat the force will be increased in a short’ time, and when: the mine—is Opened.up more extensively, a large mill be put up. Next week work will ‘be started on a boarding house for the accommodation of the men employed. The mine is on the north side of Bear River, and is on the same lead as the Bonnie Bell. The Bonnie Bell, which is on the south side of Bear River in Placer county, has been yielding good ore for some time, and a new mill will be put up immediately. © His. Answer Was Right. At a school in Kent an inspector was examining a class of children in arithmetic when the inspector asked the following question: “Now, John, supposing I gave you two rabbits and another kind friend gave you one more, how many would you have ?” : John—Four, sir. Among the villagers on the Volga in the province of Samara a curious sect of women has made its appearance. It was originated by an dee: : ly peasant woman in Soznova, callwomen have fled from the villages around into a remote-district, where they live singly in holes dug out of the face of the hill. They lead a life of fasting and ie er, and believe themselves called from the world, which they think is shortly about to perish in a general conflagration. The “Blessed Mother” has “ten wise virgins” as a sort of bodyguard, and the sect believes that these 11 women are possessed of miraculous powers. — London Globe. Coronation Kisses. ‘ “The sound of a kiss is not so loud as that of a cannon,” remarked the professor at the breakfast table, “but its echo lasts a deal longer.” Latterly it seems to’ last before it begins. Nearly a year before his coronation King Edward annonnced that the ceremony of kissing by the peers would be omitted. “Imagine me compelling Devonshire to kiss me!” he is said to have exclaimed. “He would never survive the ordeal.” William IV, who objected to this art 6f the ceremony, submitted to t, but declared he would renounce the kingship rather than repeat the experience. wo Names and Two Results. A large steamer was once wrecked because one of the sailors was named West. The vessel was outward bound from Rotterdam, and the sailor was op deck polishing some brasswork. Suddenly the captain called him and told bim to go below. The second officer on
the bridge heard the captain call out the man’s name and thought it was an order to change the course of the vessel to west. He did so, and the result was that the ship ran on to a dangerous shoal. That name cost the owners of the vessel the sum of $500,000. During the Afghan war of 1879 a small British detachment gained a vietory over a large body of the enemy by a mistaken order. A private named Vance, who had distinguished himself by several acts of bravery, was a great favorite with one of the officers, and during a skirmish the officer wanted him to carry a dispatch to the colonel) in command of another detachment. The man was only a few yards away, and he.called out, “Vance!” at the top of his voice. The men thought he had given the order “Advance!” and imme diately rushed forward wita such dasli and spirit that the ememy broke and eee Headache Saps Your Vitality And. wrecks the brain.
