THE ESTEE MEETING. —
One of the Most Enthusiastic Ever
Held in San Francisco.
San Francisco, August 2, ’94.
_Eprrorn Transcript: The Republican
campaign had a brilliant and enthusiastic
opening at the old Wigwam last night.
There was never such an opening seen in
this city before. There was as much enthusiasm as is generally seen at the close of most
campaigns. The house was packed with the

and old time war-horses, were conspicuous.

The Grass Valley End.
The rough part of the Grass Valley road
between the Roberts and Hammill places,
is‘being put in good shape, under the direction of Supervisor Donnelly, who has men
and teams at work there now. When this
is‘completed the road will be in fine condition the entire distance between the two

next tothe City Hall, and which has of
late been occupied by Mrs. Jacobs. “Mrs.
Conlan will keep a restaurant and lodging
public roads and ask why we still follow
bine old patchwork system, instead of buildnga permanent road bed, he would get
about the same answer—because that was
the way it was done before the present
builders were in @uthority.
Our Supervisors, however, would give a
different answer and that is: ‘*Because that
is the only way we.can keep the, roads passable with the limited amount of money
at our command.” :
“It takes about all the money on hand in
the road fund each spring to ‘fill mudholes
of the preceding winter; and if they fill up
the mudhuvles they have no funds for building turnpikes and digging waterways along
the sides of the roads to keep the winter
rains from washing the earth from the center of the roads.
And so it goes. As long as you put all
the wheat in one end of the sack you must
put a rock in the other end as: a balance.
As long as yeu spend all the road money for
the filling of mudholes, just so long you
w ill have an abundance of mudholes to fill.
It is about time to drop this time-serving
policy, and to go intelligently at work to
. build a permanent road bed.
‘‘But that will take more money,” exclaims the tax-payer. Of course it will
take more money, but if the money is used
for the conatrnetinn of a properly-made
‘ turnpike it is invested in a permanent improvement which will be a great conven.
ience to travelers, and a means of increasing-the taxable.value. of property.. It. is
high time that our citizens awoke to the
importance and necessity of using the road
fnad: for the construction of a permanent
road bed along the line of our main-traveled roads, that the roads may remain passable in winter as well as in summer.
Let the county issue long-term bonds and
nse the money derived therefrom in builce
ing roads that will be both permanent
and useful. The money thus invested will
bring back more. than double its value io
the increased thrift and prosperity of our
communities which depend on the highways
for traffic,

been on exhibition at Grass Valley for about
two weeks. Is it not about time the people of Nevada City had a glimpse of it?
This question has been asked the TranSCRIP reporter many times. There is great
anxiety expressed to see it, especially by
many who took a very active part in getting

been a zealous worker, in season and out of
season. The very building in which the
meeting was held last night, was largely
built by Burns’ subscription, he having
four. years ago drawa his check for six
thousand dollars for that: purpose.
Burns’ activity is no new thing. He
made Governor Markham’s fight for the
nomination four years ago, and contributed
more to-his support than any single individual. He has been one of the Governor's
confidential advisors throughout his administration. The State has seen no cause
to regret his influence the past four years,
While it is true that the San. Francisco
delegation voted as a unit at the State Convention, it is also true that it did not act
from selfish motives, for it was not manipulated in the interests of local candidates. It
threw the offices to other parts of the
State, instead of toSan Franciscans. ©
Again it is true that Mr. Estee had the
nomination before San Francisco . was
reached in the roll call, and needed no help
from the city delegation, the way the vote
stood then. While the delegates voted
solid at the convention the city will give
the nominees the largest vote this fall any
candidates of the party ever received heretefore. The Republican banner will be
carried to victory this fall, and domt your
forget it. OBSERVER.

from head to foot with a red and exceedingly troublesome rash, from which
she had suffered for two or three years,
in spite of the best medical treatment
available. Her father was in great
distress about the case, and, at my
recommendation, at last began to administer Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, two bottles of which effected a complete cure, -.
