At last, after a long wish, we are to have
a: really meritorious dramatic company,
headed, by the brilliant, young emotional
actress, May Nannary. Both the stars and
supporting organization are well known to
the best theatre-goers, and they have just
achieved additional laurels at the Grand
Opera House in San Francisco, where they
broke all previous records, The attraction .
will doubtless crowd our theatre to its full
capacity.

‘ At the special meeting of the Board of
"City Trustees last night, held for the pur‘the Cleveland Democracy. And in presentAN IMMENSE MEETING.
Hon. M. M. Estee’s First Speech of
the Campaign.
Here is what the San Francisco Chronicle
has to say about Wednesday evening’s meeting : ey ‘
There was a very large and enthusiastic
gathering at the Wigwam last night to hear
Morris M. Estee, the Republican candidate
for Governor. While the meeting was not
a formal opening of the State campaign,
which will occur later, the outpouring of the
Republican masses of this city to receive’ Mr,
Estee on the occasion of his first public ‘appearance since his nomination, gives promise
of a triamphant victory in Nevember.
Mr. Estee was in the best of form and his
splendid address, which will be found in the
Chronicle this morning, was greeted with
hearty approval and marked enthusiasm,
Indeed, this opening speech, which will take
the place of a letter of acceptance, will serve
to satisfy the whole Republican party of
California and all right-thinking men in the
State, that the Sacramento convention acted
most wisely In placing Mr. Estee at the’
head of the Republican ticket. No man
can read this patriotic, thoughtful and comprehensive discussion of the living political
issues of-the day without feeling, without
being convinced, that Mr. Estee will make
a Governor of whom the whole people of
California can be proud. ‘
Mr. Estee has not made a mistake in
bringing the national political issues forward into bold relief. There are no great
questions at issue in California besides these.
{he Republican party is a national party.
The Republicans of California are national
Republicans in every sense, and the contest
this fall in the State will be fought out upon
national issues. When the Democrats of
California and the Populists, the left wing
of the Democracy as Mr. Estee expresses it,
have declared themselves, it will be found
that Mr. Estee has wisely anticipated them
in this regard.
In his treatment of the tariff question Mr.
Estee made a happy hit in his characterization of the weak and vacillating policy of
S
ing his-own views on Américan protection
he was clear, precise and logical. The people of California, remembering Mr. Estee’s
brilliant controversial campaign with Senaator White two years ago were made familiar with the devotion of the Republican can.
didate to the principles of protection, But
in his speech last night Mr. Estee brought
out more clearly than ever the pivotal point
in the American doctrine’ of protection—
that is tosay, that the prosperity of the
country must in the end depend upon the
MINING NOTES.
The Eagle Bird Under a New Name
and New Owners.
The company now owning the Eagle Bird
mine, in Washington district, have changed
the name of the mine to the Oak Tree. It
has of late been known as the Diamond D.
Each time the property changes hands the
name also ischanged. The present company
has a number of men at work in the mine
and is having the mill put in thorough repair and good working order. New concentrators for the mill were shipped from
this city today.
Cole & Williamson havé about arranged
to bond their mine to Haywards & Co. of
San Francisco. ‘They have an immense
ledge, sixty feet wide, and the general
character of the quartz is good. It is believed that if proper machinery was put up,
so as to work the miue on a large scale and
at the same time economically, it would
prove a big paying investment.
The Spanish mine owners have’ men at
work prospecting below the mill with a
view of moving the mill, as all the ground
above has been worked out.
In Eureka district Messrs. David Moore
of Washington, Cc. D. Eastin of Eureka,
and Charles Bonnemort of Oakland are
mine. They have a good ledge of fine rock,
and the ten-stamp mill is. kept running
steadily. The mine is situated below the
National, towards the Middle Yuba river,
and about four miles frém* the town of
Graniteville.
