There is talk of an all-night service at the telephone exchange in Grass Valley. If fifty subscribers-.can be found who are willing to pay a slightly additional tariff, the all-night service will be instituted. William Temby, a miner at the Massachusetts Hill, recently had one _ of his hands cut by a rock falling on it. Some giant powder got.in the wound, and for a time blood-poisoning was feared. It is now believed that all danger is past. * This morning Frank Lord took two mining men from Denver and Charles M. Zeitler out to the Massachnsets Hill mine in a carriage. On the return trip became “and dropped, and there came near being a serious accident. Young Lord handled the horses so well, however, Wedding Belis. Miss Carrie Miller, the charming and popular daughter of the late B. H. Prrrssure, Pa., Aug. 31—County Detective Robinson, with twenty-five deputies and four Pinkerton detectives, raided one uf the negro railroaders’ camps at Unity yesterday and captured twelve men and three women. There was no resistance. Burned to a Crisp. Tampa, Florida, August 31.—Marie, the 14-year-old daughter of Mrs. Valdez of Port Tampa, started a fire with kerosene. In an explosion that followed both the girl and her mother were burned to a crisp and an unknown boy was burned to death. The house and five others adjoining it were consumed. Repulsed a Mob. Sacramento, Aug. 8lst.—Fred Hart, once of the most extensive newspaper men on the coast, died today in the County Hospital. He was 65 years old. He leaves a wife and two children. A Sensational Statement, , wife of Frank Singler, of this de}phia cigar house, has made the :following sensational declaration: “I am a descendent of Stephen Girard, the multi-millionaire of Philadelphia, founder of Girard College. My great grandfather was a brother of Stephen Girard’s father: When Stephen Girard died in 1831, he left a fortane, which has increased until it is now about $20,000,000. He had no descendants and the collateral descendants could not be found, so he left his estate to charity. Iam going to try to wreck Girard College and get my money.” A Campaign of Slaughter. Cuicaco, August 31.—Mande Maynard Noel, a young Ohicago woman, herself beautiful and in perfect health, has begun a campaign which has for its aim, the slaughter of all the weak, whether physically or mentally incapable. She would relentlessly kill them by a painlesa death, if possible, and holds that the end would justify the means, for it would benefit the human race. A Swindler Lynched. Sr Paut, Aug. 31.—A lightning rod agent is reported to have been lynched last night at Belgrade, a small town in Stores county, Minnesota, the people alleging a case of swindling. Big Embezzlement. Boston, August 31.—Robert A.Strain, president of the United Telegram Company, was arrested and charged with embezzling $71,000-from the company. The arrest was at the instance of William Baker, vice president of the Postal Telegram. One More Sign of Prosperity. Rich gravel is being taken from the Cotton Hill mine in Washington district. A tunnel 300 feet long taps the channel, which is 70 feet wide. The gold is coarse and many small nuggets, worth from $8 to $4, are found. The claim is owned by six or seven mine: one of them being Henry Damon o: this city. Adjoining the above mine is what is known as the Gold Hill mine, through which the same channel extends. It is owned by Mrs. L. A. White and we are informed that negotiating to buy it. C. G. Fisk and partners have struck it rich in their gravel claim on Fall creek. Last evening's Telegraph says: About noon today William §. May,in company with T. A. Carson, returned from the Good Title mine, located at Indiana Ranch in Yuba county. Mr, Carson is the secretary and treasurer he recently came out here from bis home, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to. examine into the affairs of the mine and to make arrangements for the erection of machinery. The mine, as far as has been prospected, amply justifies the immediate erection of a 20-stamp mill with all’means and appliances and Mr. May, the well-known mill wright, hes been selected by the company to perform that duty. Mr. May went to In-j diana Ranch a few days since to look at the ground and returns with the intention of leaving again on ‘or about Saturday to commence work upon the 20-stamp mill. It is the intention of Mr. Carson to leave for Cincinnati on Monday next and to return in the October month with his family to California and live at the mine, He has ordered a house to be built for himself structure also, OR oe An Immense Audience.
