o< PIE eecioees trchechicrieins Be ‘* BROWN & CALKINS. Te. P. BROWN. t, 6. CALKINS. -_. THURSDAY.....AUG. 31, 1899. MECHANIC'S INSTITUTE FAIR Our Correspondent Tells About the At-\. fractions to be Presented. San Francisco, Aug 30, 1899, Eprroz Transcriet:-—With the great reception to the California Volunteers passed and gone, San.Francisco. now. . is’ preparing for the Mechanic’s Fair, which, in the many years that it has been held by the Mechanic's Ins‘itute, has become an essential part of the ' @ity’s institatious. The doors of the Pavilion willl be thrown open ‘on Sat urday night for what promises to be in every way the most novel and interest-_ ing fair that ever bas been held on this Oogst. From a spectacular point of view the visitor will at once be taken with the main aisle, which will be » thing of beauty. It will be 25 feet wide and will be bordered by stately palmtrees connected with each other by strings of incandescent electric lamps. The entrance to the main aisle is between two Philippine cottages constructed of bamboo and woven palm leaves. Exhibitors along. the muin aisle have adopted for their booths designs running from Grecian'‘and Roman tea gardens. ' California artists will be well represented in the art gallery where over 800 paintings of superior merit will form an exceptionally fine exhibit. * The Indian village, representing the “life of California aborigines, is expected to be ready by the openivg night, although Mr. Healy, the director of the Institute who has the engagement of the Indians in hund, has encountered many difficulties in dealing with “Poor Lo” of Ukiah, and at the last moment, Medicine Chief, Captain Bill, of the Pomos, refused to come. Indians have been secured from Round Valley, however, and the materials for the village are being rapidly collected. With the Indians will be a fine collettion of baskets, Indian money and other objects of interest. How the California Indians and the Filipiiios will take to each other is a matter of interest. They will not live in villages adjacent to each other as was at first intended, but will be far apart, the Indian village being on the Grove street side of the Pavilion, while he Phillippine village will be on the Hayes street side. The Filipinos, who call themselves white people, look with contempt on all other races arid wheth: ér'the noble Indian will stand this contempt is a problem to be. solved. Should hostilities be possible, there will always be a force of watchmen .on hand to prevent damage. The Filipino circus départment with the perform ers, musicians, and the ponies will be in the gallery, where a ring has beenconstructed. The water-buffalo have had a water-hole constructed for them next the village in the annex to the Pavilion and will remain in-the annex, where they will be ridden and driven by the natives for the edification of the spectators. Arrangements for ‘reduced railroad rates to the Fair from all points in California, which were interrupted by the departure of Mr. McCormick of the Southern Pacific Company for the East, are now being discussed and satisfactory terms will doubtless be made. All the fraternal orders will have their respective special nights at the Fair and there will be special attractions, such as baby-shows, doll-dressing contests, bread-baking contests, and the like. GoLp FLatrer, = Sealine A newly-married couple in Portland, Me., who are both deaf and dumb, and are trying housekeeping without a servant, have devised an ingenious substitute for a doorbell. When a caller presses the electric button all the lights in the house flash up and his presence is made known. _—__—__—_+ «2 --——______ “How are you getting along with that scheme of yours for a procession of the unemployed to march to the City Hall and demand work?” “It’s going to be a fizzle. The blamed chumps all send me word they're too busy and can’t get away.” “Say,” said the chief bootblack, “who is dis Shakespeare you're talkin’ about, any way? He must be some new chap what's jist bobbing up. I ain’t seen no cigar dat’s named after him yit.” “So his mother intends making a pianist of him?” “Yes.” “Who is to be the master?” “She hasn’t got that far yet; at present she is merely just letting his hair grow.” Ida—They say Maud didn’t succeed asa nurse in the Philippines? McGlashan . received the entire vote, Rev. W. T. McClure, formerly of Cedarville, has: been assigned to Trucconvened in Susanville last week. Rev. John Telfer will go to Cedarville. will give a grand Admission Day ball on Friday, September 8th. The. proceeds of the ball are to be applied to the California Volunteer Medal Fund. Work on the Tahoe railroad is progressing rapidly. About a mile of track has been laid in the past few days and the company has an engine running out over the road that, has been The people of Lake Tahoe are wondering what change bas come over the Truckee postmaster. For the past eighteen or twenty years the mail had been sent tothe lake on Sunday the Same as other days of the week. This courtesy bas been withdrawn this summer and the people there feel it keenly. Mrs. M. 4. Cooke returned from San Francisco Sunday. Mr. Oooke remained in the city and is undergoing treatment for varicose veins in his legs from which he has suffered very much during the past few years. They expect their son Fred to return from Maarrive in the city in about ten days or two weeks. «ue a Mrs. Alta Tomlinson died at her home at the head of Donner Lake Sanday. Mrs. Tomlinson bas lived _at the lake during the -summer for many som. She was a highly respected _resident of the community where she lived. For sowe time her health’ had pected. Herage was 74 years and 7 months. It was only a few days ago that the death of her oldest son was chronicled in these colamns. She leaves two sons and two daughters. Road Master J. E. McCornack will begin the construction of a new piece of snow shed at this 6nd of Tunnel 13 this week. There will té'a section of the shed a hundred feet in length that will be placed on rollers. It-will-be made smaller than the rest of the shed so in the summer time when the sheds are not needed it be run into the other part in telescope fashion thas making a fire break of a hundredfeet at the mouth of the tunnel. It is-a new plan but it certainly is a feasible one. A new piece of track will also be laid in the near future at the curve in the horseshoe bend on Cold Stream. It will run around from the curve and turn back to the main track this way forming a baloon track where engines can be turned without putting them onthe turntable. It will prove a very great convenience especially in the winter time when it is often necessary to send snow plows up the track several times a day to keep the road clear of snow. It will take only a short piece: of road to’ connect back with the main line and the sheds will be extended down to where the turn back this way is made. eR Un ee a RETR Landor’s Cravat. At a friendly dinner at Gore Honse, when it was the most delightful of bouses, his drees—sag hie cravat or shirt collar—had become slightly diearranged on a hot evening, and Count d’Orsay laughingly called his attention to the circumstance as we rose from table. Landor became flushed and greatly agitated. ‘My dear Count d’Orsay, I thank you! My dear Count d'Orsay, I thank. you from my soul for pointing out to me the abominable condition to whick I am reduced! _ If I had entered before Lady Bid&sington in so absurd a light, I would instantly have gone home, put a pistol to my head ‘and blown my brains out. *“—*‘Landor’s Lettera f — — One of Millions, Once upon a time there lived a man who wanted only a few things that everybody wants. He wanted plenty to eat and drink, leisuré and the woman he loved. But he fonnd that to have time to himself to make it possible to live pleasantly with his sweetheart and give her.all he wanted and to take care of the children that they might have— ‘0 do all this he must have a great deal of money. So be went to work and built up a great business, a very complicated machinery. To this money producing machinery he was forced to give most of his energy. It gave him no time for leisure, no energy for ex joying the sunshine, his wife and children. Even its offensive effect depends. less on the weapon itself than on the continual and skillful usage made of it by the Cuban -peasant from his earlier age. which imparts a peculiar training to the muscles of the} wrist and arm of “the operator. cousequence of this skill is that whenever a quarrel occnrs between two “‘onajiros’’ or ‘‘monetros’’ they settae the matter with their machetes as courageously and tenaciously as two gamecocks, and generally both parties are seriously injured for life or are killed Owing to this fact and to the natural kindly disposition of the Cuban peasants, they are’ not a quarrelsome people. and respect everybody, to. be equally respected. With the machete a few curious accessories are used.: The principal are a thin strip of leather closely tied to the right wrist, a small round piece of grinding stone to sharpen the edge of the tool, and whenever the machete-is employed to cut down the thorny heath of tropical vegetation a small branch of special shape, called the ‘‘garabate,’’ is used to hold the heath and do rapid work without being injured.by thorns.—Island of Cuba The greatest customers the Peoria distillers have are the Japanese.
