NOMP, Mareo Medin’s Experience in That Par Northern Region, Marco Medin Jr., has just returned to Butte, Montana, from Cape Nome and furnishes the Miner. with the ‘{following information of interest rela'ing to that region; + . The great trouble about Nome is that it is overdone. I have seen as many as 40,000 people there, whereas the conditions do not warrant @ poptlation of 5,000. When I left there. were atid 20,0¢O people there, mostidt, them anxious to getaway, I talked “with at least 200 placer minere who are fvorking the beach claims, and I found that of the 5,000 men who have been working on the beach none have averaged better shan 4a day. John Noyes and hie two sons have a good paying claim on Nicholas creek, seven miles from Nome, They paid $25,000 for it and Mr. Noyes told me . they were taking out $1,000 per day.. A great deal more money has been spent in Cape Nome ani ti getting there than will be tuken out for sev‘eral years.” An immense quantity of machinery is strang along the beach +8: ing toruin. The only lines of business that can be said to have done well
are the saloons and restaurants, Ed the Butte cafe, has taken in as much as $2,000 a day. The moral condition of Nome is sadly demoralized. Ali the variety shows and dance halls have . aha failures.
