STRONG ENDORSEMENT,
The Convention Urgent Urgently Request Delefates to Stand By J. M. Walling.
At the meeting of the Republican
County Convention yesterday the delegates heartily endorsed Hon. J. M
Walliing for the nomination for Oongreasman of the Second Congressional
District. Following is the resolutions:
Reso.vep, That the Republican party
of ‘Nevada county in convention assembled, heartily “endorse the candi~ dacy of Hon. J. M. Walling forthe
Qongressional nomination in the Second Oongreasi District, and ur
tt] uest%ll delegates from this
Gaate <0 the Second OCongressiona:
District Convention to use-all bunorable means to secure his nomination.
‘Jn endorsing Mr, Walling the Oon
vention but voiced the sentimente oi
the Republicans of the county, who are
unanimous in the wish that he should
¢ be successful. Mr. Walling is a mau
with whom all our people are ac
quainted, for he has served them at
Recorder and Superior Judge and in
each of these positions faithfully, honestly and conscientiously performed
his duties. On the bench his decisione
were for the right and according to law,
and he did what he thought was just
and proper, in a fearless and straightforward manner. His habits are of the
best, and he always respects the opinfons of others. Mr. Walling is. @. map
whom the people of the Second Oon” “gressional District could depend upon
to represent them wiih fidelity, and
with fairness to all sections of the District. He is a man who would stand
for the rights of his constituents, and
would not waver one iota from what he
considered proper. He has been a resident of this city for the past 84 years,
and known to all our people.
Mr. Walling receive the. nomination it
would be equivalent to an election.
Stand by the Republican Perty.
With the exception of two years, years
productive of distress, hunger, bank
Faptcy.and panic, the destiny _ of the
‘Nation has been partially or entirely
under the control of the RK publica:
party ever since the inauguration of
‘Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Daring
these forty years the ovuntry has advanced by leaps and bounds in populution, wealth, material, socia}, and inte}lec ual development. The trans-Missie
sippt region has been converted fron.
baffalo ranges to imperial States, bridges have been throwu across mighty
rivers, railways have been built ovr
the mountaizs, millions of homes
bave been created, schools With
out number have been built, college
have been endowed, human liberty ha
been extended, the verdict of the ballot‘tas been respected: (in Republican
States), and the Republic has a deeper
bold on the affections of its citizens
than ever netow, _ compels respect
abroad.

Republicans ¥ ntitled to the Credit.
The fact that Great Britain must
sell 8 per cent bonds at 2 per cent discount and pay the purchaser a bonus
of oné month’s interest, while the
United States can borrow all’ the
money it wants at 2 per cent. is one of
the results of the wise financial. legislation for which the Republican party
is to be given’ credit. Our govern=
ment can borrow money cheaper than:
any other power on earth, and this is
a direct advantage to every citizen in the
country.

CONDITIONS iT AT CAPE. NOMP,
Mareo Medin’s Experience in That Par
Northern Region,
Marco Medin Jr., has just returned
to Butte, Montana, from Cape Nome
and furnishes the Miner. with the
‘{following information of interest rela'ing to that region; + .
The great trouble about Nome is that
it is overdone. I have seen as many as
40,000 people there, whereas the conditions do not warrant @ poptlation of
5,000. When I left there. were atid 20,0¢O people there, mostidt, them anxious
to getaway,
I talked “with at least 200 placer
minere who are fvorking the beach
claims, and I found that of the 5,000
men who have been working on the
beach none have averaged better shan
4a day.
John Noyes and hie two sons have a
good paying claim on Nicholas creek,
seven miles from Nome, They paid
$25,000 for it and Mr. Noyes told me
. they were taking out $1,000 per day..
A great deal more money has been
spent in Cape Nome ani ti getting
there than will be tuken out for sev‘eral years.” An immense quantity of
machinery is strang along the beach
+8: ing toruin. The only lines of business that can be said to have done well
are the saloons and restaurants, Ed
the Butte cafe, has taken in as much as
$2,000 a day. The moral condition of
Nome is sadly demoralized. Ali the
variety shows and dance halls have
. aha failures. All the Proprietors
went broke and all are now closed.
