T IS REPORTED on most reliable authority that -M:H. de Young, proprietor of the San Francisco Ohronicle, has failed greatly in his menta! bodily health duringthe past few months, and that he is now in Paris under the 2are of two nurses:.The report adds that bois undergoing troatment from the most celebrated mental specialists in Europe in the hope of deterring the development of a mental malady which might tead to: his utter incapacity. The news of Mr. de Young’s serious condition only reached the quickly, and now the subjéct is a general topic of diseussion among city folk, and bis friends fear the worst. It is said that Mr. de Young has broken down_ gradually under the strain of much work and worry and many excitements, and that he will not be able to attend to business for a long while, acd that there was a possibility that he might not recover. Intimate friends of Mr. de Young deny any knowledge of his reported illness, while others intimate tbat the worst might happen. Letters received frcm him within a few days by his friends are apparently clear and coherent, and it is principally on that evidence that the contradiction to the story of his breaking down is made. However, it will not be astonishing if the news ia confirmed later, for Mr 12 t-2c Per Wee . . Captaiu Buckley, a well known mining man, bas been in Downieville for over a month He has made. arrangements to reopen the old Empire mine at Gold Valley immediately. Preliminary work bas been commenced in the way of repairs on the buildings at the mine. It is the intention of Oaptain Buckley to sink the main shaft to a depth of 1000 feet. It is now down 400 feet. The property is equipped with electrical appliances, de Young has led a very active and even strenuons life, and has had more toil and. anxiety than.falls to most men. He is naturally hot-blooded and he spent his energy very freely. He threw himself into Many enterprises and worked hard. His early life was tempestuous. Since he became proprietor of the Chroniele he has given his attention to politice and money-getting, and in neither field has he spared his own strength. He is a rich man and his investments lie in many parts of the country. He kept all of them directly under his own eye and was constantly in the barness. Re ie of an aggressive nature and insisted on taking part in the management of every concern in which he had money. When rivals tried to bar him him out he forced his way, for he is a man not readily to be set back. e There can be no doubt that the affair which tended most to break down his strength was the failure of his ambition to go to the United States Senate. De Young had striven hard for the Senatorship, and a few months before the Legislature met in 1899 the plum seemed to be within his clutch. He had the promice of unlimited support and apparently had conquered all rivals. But the story is still fresh of the way in which one de Young’s strongest and most influential supporters, as the newspaper map oonsidered him, withdrew his support from de Young and threw his strength to another candidate. De Young was too angry to think of anything but revenge. He attacked his unloyal friend and the Southern Pacific very bitterly and thas burned his bridgea behind him and placed the Senatorship beyond his reach forever. The defeat of a hope which he has cherished for many years bas affected him and may bave contributed much to the impairment of his healih. As his wealth enlarged his business activity extended and he went far afield in his meney making. He liked Europe, and bad « house in Paris as well as bis large and magnificent bome in San Francisco. Before his recent departure from San Francisco his friends bad detected signs of a change. His: face flushed easily and he became testy and vexatious. self and his demeanor caused some comment, However much it may be denied, it will eventaally be known that de He was anlike his usual truth of the story and says that his mind is affected and that feele that his case is serious.
