‘when the first warning notes came the

He thought evidently that they should

Saturday’s Fire.
There was an alarm of fire late Saturday afternoon occasioned by a blaze

the garbage pile and set fireto it, The

The Purest Love Affair,
Of all the love affairs in the world
none can surpass the true love of the
big boy for his mother. Itis pure and
noble, honorable in the highest degree to both. We do not mean merely
a datifu, affection. We mean a love
which makes a boy gallant and coarteous to his mother, saying to everybody that he is fairly in love with her.
Next to the love ofa husband, nothing
80 crowns 8 womanu’s life with honor
as this second love, this true devotion
ofasontoher, And we never knew a
boy to “turn out” badly who began by
falling in love with his mother. Avy
man may fall in love with a freshfaced girl, and the man who is gallant
withthe girl may cruelly neglect the
worn and weary wife. But the boy
who is a lover of his mother in her
middle age is a true knight who will
love his wife as much in the sereleaved autumn as he did in the daisied
springtime.

Pred ¢. Peterson Came
Near Being Dashed
to Death,
Glenbrook Park on Saturday night
was 8 place of great attraction. Between seven and eight hundred people
were there, and to say that the ride for
life was thrilling, would be drawing it
mild. Fred Peterson started from the
top of an incline, about sixty feet in
height, on a bicycle, and when he had
. descended abont eight or.ten--fest-tteyMer--On-thebicycle struck a board that was raised
a@ little, and Peterson was thrown from.
the wheel. Luckily, however, he was
pitched into the water about fifty feet
below. The crowd held their breath,
and it was a moment of awful suspense, but Peterson came up smiling,
with only a few scratches on his legs.
Had~hefallen on the other side he
would have been dashed-.on-the--bank
of the dam, and undoubtedly killed.
Baskel Ball Game.
« Last Friday night two interesting
games of basket ball were played between the Y. M. O. A. teams
of Santa Cruz andthe Reds and the
Blues of Conipany ©. The contests
took place in the Y. M. O. A’s gymnasium at the seaside city, and: the attendance was large. The outcome of
the games was as follows: Blues 11,
Second Team 8; First Tem 41, Reds 2,
A Santa Oruz paper states that the
first game was not quite as brilliant
as it might have been and after a hard
tussel the Blues won their victory.
This was due to the latter’a quickness,
Hocking, Hallet, Marker, Huy and
Doyle each played their positions well
and deserve oredit, for they worked to
disadvantage in many respects.
In the second game the Reds submitted to the inevitable with geod
grace. They bad hard luck in the
scoring line, and it seemed as though
a hoodoo hovered over them. They
did fine passing and played a clean
game, but hed their disadvantages in
