SHOULD BE HEARTILY ENDORSED
OWA FOLLOWS the lead of Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Wisconsin,
Indiana and Missouri in endorsing President Roosevelt. This points
out the way to California Republicans. Out here we cordially approve
of the general policy of the Administration. Some have disagreed with the
President’s views about Cuban reciprocity, but that is a mere deta't which
ae a8 Has yet to séttic. “In aif other respects President Roosevelt’ is in:
accord with Republican sentiment on the: Pacifls Coast. Therefore, the State
«Convention at Sacramento should give him as hearty an indorsement as the.
language affords. He has shown himeelf to be-a fearless and capable executive, whose honesty of intention and patriotism of motive cannot be questioned. His policy.ie admirable and his personality striking and lovable,
He is a leader who not only commands: loyalty and confidence, but inspire,
affection and enthusiasm. One of his most admirable traits is his keen sense
of justiee.. But the people love him. for his intense Americanism. and his devotion to the principles on which this repnblie was founded and which are the
common heritage of men of all parties. He is especially entitled to the support and endorsement of Oalifornians because he is a champion of the West—
_& believer in Western ideas and Western progress. He is one of our folks, so
to speak, and we must speak for him as such.

NEW ERA OF GOOD FEELING.
x
HE GREAT INOREASE in the past few weeks in the number of
nations which have given recognition to the Cuban republic ought to
be very gratifying to that country, as it is to the United States. The
nations which, along to this time; have done this arethe United States, England, France, Spain, Switzerland, Hayti, Nicaragaa, Oosta Rica and Guatemala. There is an especial reason for gratification in the circumstance that
Spain is among the number of the countries which have extended the hand of
welcome to the new nation, It is commonly hard for any country to look
the United States. A long time passed before Spain did that in the case of the
Central and South American countries which broke away from her three_ quarters of a century ago.
A distinctive advance has thus been wade in international comity in the
lapse of time. There was a.special reason why the United States should have
been ready to extend the hand of fellowship to the ex-Spanish peoples of the
first quarter of the nineteenth century, for it was the United States’ example

Miss Mary Phelan returned to-day

the San Jian Ridge.
Mrs. J. A. Archer and James Archer
of Sant. Rosa arrived here this mornwhich incited them to strike for liberty. It was 1822, however, before the. ing on a visit. :
_ united States did this fn s format way, while some ofthe countries affected
had been physically independent of Spain at that time for two or three years,
When at last the special message from President Monroe, recommending the
establishment of missions tn Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Buenos Ayres andChili reached Congress in 1822, quick work was made by that body and soon
this country had embassies in all those nations. The case of Mexico was peculiar in the fact that Iturbide had established an empire in that. country just
after it broke away from Spain and just before United States recognized her,
and most persons here felt canfident that a republics would.goon come in place
of the empire, and every one here wanted it to come. It did‘ come shortly
after Mexican Indeperidence was recognized.
Cuba is thus far more fortunate than were its predecessors in the promptdess and cordiality with which it has been received in the family of nations
There were particular reasons, of course, why most of the great nations of
Europe were slow in extending their hand to Mexico and her associates in the
early quarter of the last century. England recognized them in 1825, but the
rest.of the leading powers of Europe belonging to the holy alliance, which in‘tended in 1824 or 1825to subvert the governments of the new republics of this
hemisphere, and either establish control over those countries themselves or
restore them to Spain, a project which ‘Monree headed off in his historic
bandsoff-the-American-continent message of 1828. France (then under the
restored Bourbons) andthe other members cf. the alliauce at length recognized
the Central and South American countries, but Spain held out against them
untll 1886. The promptness with which all those countries, including the
mother country herself, Spain, have extended their bands to the Ouban republic is a striking compliment to Cuba herself, as well ae to her sponsor, the . “

Better Than Standard Oil
When William Rockefeller had appendicitis Dr. McBirhéey was called in
to perform the pecessary operation.
. After his recovery Mr. Rockefeller received the doctor’s billin due time,
and, drawing a check, went to pay the
account in person, In the conversation that followed, appendicitis wae
naturally the main theme.
“You told me,’ said Mr. Rockefeller,
“while I was sick, doctor, that everybody inthe world had a veriform appendix.”
“With few exceptions, I believe that
to be the case,” answered the doctor.
“And sooner or later,” pursued the
oil megnate, “everyone would have to
be operated on, either to cure or prevent the disease.”
“That is the generally recognized
opinion among the medical fraternity,”
was the answer.
“Well,” said Rockefeller, rising, “if
you will pardon my saying so, it seems
to me that you have a Letter thing of

The inherited effects of thus grasping
tree trunks or limbs with the hind
hands are often very marked in young
babies. The bow legs, which are a
feature of infancy and a matter of
some anxiety to mothers, are no more

frightened about this character; any
normally healthy baby will grow out
of it soon enough.
Then, if a young baby be beld so that
