HOLBROOK. A Pioneer Woman of Nevada City Goes to Her Long Home. Mrs. J.8. Holbrook, a pioneer resident of Nevada City, died of heart} failure shortly after six o'clock this! morning. She had been ill for a fortnight past, but until the last few hours her family did not realize that she was in a critical condition. The will of Fergus O’Leary, the capitalist, who once resided in Nevada county and who died at the Grand Hotel in San Francisco July 26th, was filed for probate yesterday. Mr. O'Leary left an estate worth about $100,000, consisting ofa lot with tween Seventh and Eighth; two animproved lots on City Hall avenue, 420 acres of land in Fresno and numerous town lots ut Sanger, personal property and cash in bank. } The will directs that the estate be converted into cash as soon as possible Mrs. Holbrook’s maiden name was Mary—_A._Scribner._-She—was— born—ia— Burlington, Vermont, July Ist, 1823. When she was six years of age her father met with an accidental death and twelve years later her mother died i of consumption. In 1850 her sister died of the same ailment, and thus she! was left the only remaining member of ea’ s terms on which peace may her family. In the year of her sister’s’ death she ‘was married at Cambridge, Vermont, to Mr. Holbrook, and. shortly afterward he came to California to seek his fortune. In 1854 Mrs. Holbrook! She was the mother of two boys and . three girls, the only surviving child being her daughter Flora. Mrs. Holbrook was a refined, kindly woman of happy disposition, and she . had. many warm friends among all classes of people. WASHINGTON, August 6—The answer of Spain to Ameribe restored is expected at any moment in official circles today. A brief press dispatch from Madrid this morning stating that Spain’s answer had been completed accepting our terms followed-ber bushend-to this country; . increased the tension over what had’ been looked upon as a which bas ever since been her bome.; culmination of the negotiations. Reports have been curment during the day that the French embassy had received a communication at an early hour this. morning, and the inference was that it was Spain’s reply to /our note. It can be stated positively that such inference was not correct. Up to midday Spain has given no intimation of its answer to any quarter in Washington. Probably a Premature Report. According to the Virginia City Chronicle, Summit Valley, just west of Summit station on the Central Pacific railroad, is one of the most delightful locations in the Sierras for camping parties, The valley has a length of nearly four miles from east to west, the railroad crossing the Yuba river Near its source at the westera enl of the valley. The breadth of this valley varies from two to three miles and is bordered on each side by lofty muntain ranges wooded to their snow-capped summits with giant tamarack an d lofty pines. The valley is a natural basin and in summer is carpeted with a . . heavy growth of grass of a brilliant emerald hue and an. endless variety of wild flowers, The heavily wooded walls onthe south are full of grouse, and the favored haunts of bands of antlered monarchs of the. glen while the crystal streams that course through its entire length are alive with mountain trout. Herbert Cooper, who is down. from the Cooper Brothers’ sawmill up towards the head of Deer creek, says that part of the country is not losing its reputation as a fishing and hunting preserve. Last Tuesday night a California lion made a descent on the camp and stole a fifty-poutid pig.
