The ringing of the courthouse bell at
8 o'clock this morning apprised our
people that something unusual had
(happened. It was quickly learned that
‘the cause of if was the rumor that peace
had been declared between the United
States and Spain. Sheriff Getchell
. was one of the first to receive the news
‘and immediately instructed Janitor
Ashburn to ring ont the glad tidings.
. Soon one of the fire bells began ringing and in a little while all the bells in
; town had joined in the chorus. Steam {
y
. whistles lent their shrill notes to help
swell the joyful sounds, while bombs
and firecrackers and othér noise makers
added to the din. The’ bell ringing
and other demonstrations were kept
up for an hour, some of the whistles
blowing at intervals all forenoon.
~ When the electric nlarm testing sigtials sounded at noon all the bells
again began to ring and kept it up for
twenty minutes or more. Some of the
whistles were blown at the same time.
As soon as Captain Nihell heard the
news he went out to the Summit mine
and started up the air compressor, so
‘that the. big whistle there could be
operated. It was in full blast in a
short time.
Great rejoicing was manifest on all
sides and everybody seemed glad to
know that the war was at an end and
that the United States had scored a
grand. triumph. A committee consisting of Hon. J. M. Walling and © J.
