P. 0, BOX E (BLOODY BATTLE AT ANG SUNDAY I ‘Spanish Panoche fresh every day at Ht] MONDAY...... August 6, 1900 . aieeenialiinahmiiiie Editorial Notes. While exploiting the San Juan Hill charge, Teddy should not forget the ice charge of the Trust. With most of the people of this country, the retention of good times will probably be the paramount issues this fall. If crowned heads continue to be murdered at the rate they are nowadays, the time may come when the positions may go begging. Probably the Colombian revolution collapsed simply because the men who were running it were not in earnest, but were only keeping in practice until the rest of the world quieted down a bit. i The British Journal mildly reprobate Emperor William’s revenge address, saying that massacre may be justified afterwards but never before the fact. There is a whole volume of British character in that remark. To prevent misunderstandings, we may mention New Orlens, where mobs of Boxers have been chasing -down and murdering utterly inoffensive negroes because one of their race committed a bloody murder, is situated in the United States and not in China. Personal Mentions. o WN, O. Clausen is here from San Francisco. Mreg.-C. Cox is down from. Patterson on a visit to friends. Mrs. Jennie Figuerra, who has beev here on a visit to Mrs, C. W. Carpenter, returned today to her home at WasLlagton. W. A. Latta, brother of Robert Latta, the livery mau, isin town. Mr. Latts is representing the Stockton Busine:s College. Miss Mand Eastin of this city, and Mrs. 8S. E. Fiske and Miss Gertrude Wilnelm of Grass Valley, returned Thursday from a two weeks’ camping trip to the lekes. Miss May Buttington returned Saturday evening from an extended trip to Berkeley and San Francisco. She will leave the latter part of ths month to teach in the public schools at Truckee, : Mr. and Mrs. S. E. McIntire and two sons will leave tomorrow by private conveyance for their home at Austin, Nevada, after a visit of six weeks witl: the gentleman’s mother, Mrs. M. E. McIntire. They Should Register. The indifference of voters as to registration continues to be a matter of surprise. There was deplorable apathy before, but upon the promuigation of the Supreme Court decision which rendered nugatory the Stratton Primary law, even the desultory interest that was taken fell off perceptibly. The class of people not registered and indifferent about it is the propertyowning and representative class, which has more r-al ircentive to t-kea hand in politics than any other. The man who need not particularly concern himself; to whom it matters no so very much in a large way how things go, is always registered. But the man who has something at stake and should Daturally be interested is often indifferent and will comprise the great bulk of those who are left off the roll. No Assassins Wanted Here. We totally object to foreigners who enjoy the hospitality of this country and its protection as an asylum, operating from here as assassins of their former potentates If they want to kill somebody let them get from under our cover and clear out, taking their ‘ohances. A governmenta! qiietus might very properly be put upon all the blatant anarchists who openly meet and formulate and glory in such crimes as the recent murder of Humbert of Italy. 2 ome Getting a Move On. There is at last something definite as to what they are going to do in China. going to Pekin, And they are going to movetoday. No calculation seems to have been made on the other forces, and it is a good indication of AngloSaxon decision of character that they do not wait on somebody else, but proceed themselves to do the thing which seems to be their duty. ———_—-+-1@e-For Sate Cheap. At quarter to three this afternoon an alarm of fire was turned in from box number 34, The firemen responded immediately but their services were not needed. Frank Morgan discovered ablaze in the yard belonging to the Gogdair estate, near . Washington schoolhouse, and after turning in the alarm immediately went to work to put out the fire. It was soon under control and was out by the time the firemeni arrived. The fire: caught in the dry grass about the ceater of the yard and was making rapid progress toward the house inthe same lot, and burned within two fest of it. Brief Mc ntion. An addition is to be built to the Relief Hill schoolhouse before school opens, James Agnews, who had served ten days in the County Jail for disturbing the peace, was given his liberty yesterday. The old Banner shaft has been cleared of water -and retimbered to a depth of 400 feet, and 2CO feet still remains before the bottom will have been reached. While Con. Grissel was on his way up Coyote street Saturday night his buggy narrowly escaped colliding with another rig which had carelessly been left standing’in the road. A minér fromthe upper country, after imbibing a large quantity of liquor, frightened a number of ladies on Sacramento street Saturday evening by trying to force an entrance into the residence of Joseph Jones and the Mills biilding. Offigér Fowler was summoned and ascertained that the fellow was looking for the place where he was lodging, and was the innocent cause of much alarm, . No Temporizing. It was the good Americin way for President McKinley to no longer dally with Li Hung Chang over the situation. He demanded that the government of the United States be put in immediate communication ‘with its minister at Pekin, and would make no promisses nor concession in the mat’er. There was no temporizing or holding back through — fear of consequences, President McKinley is a fall-blooded American, careful in bis movements, clear in his insight, and courageoas Died of Lockjaw. One of Fritz Hoffman’s best horses dropped dead, near the stable on Spring street this afternoon. The cause of death was lockjaw. ‘This is a very greut loss to Mr. Hoffman. Sworn In Today. At noon today the County Olerk swore in A. B. Wolf as Chief Engineer ‘of the Nevada City Fire Department and E. W. Schmidt as Assistan Chief. The two gentlemen are young and lively and will make very efficent officers. eke WHICH WOULD BE MASTER? If Mr. an were to be elected president it would be by grace of Boss Croker and with the aid of Tammany hall. Without New York Mr. Bryan can not by any possibility be elected and he can not by any possibility capture New York without the aid of Tammany and its boss. , Boss Croker has testified in open court, or, to speak with more exactness, committee, that he is in politics for what he can make ont of it. Mr. Bryan’s champions claim for him the highest political ideals.. They regard him as a single minded patriot who would scorn to do evil that good might come of it. Mr. Bryan and the unspeakable Boss Croker have entered into political relations, the one with the other, and the closeness of that relation may be inwire to Boss Croker at Kansas City the friendly words: “My greetings to Tammanny on this anniversary of the nation’s birthday.” : The crucial question is: ‘In the event of Mr. Bryan's election to the presidency which influence will be paramount in the nation’s councils that of Mr. Bryan, the untutored idealist, or that of Mr. Croker, the grand sachem of the most corrup political organiga-, tion on earth? 3 What does the common experience of mankind say of the results of co-par€weak by want of worldly wisdom, and the incarnate soul of mammon steeped. in craft and reinforced by a perfected mechanism for working in iniquity? _ That combination was not fit to be'. made and the voter can rest assured that it was not made without guaranwhen he has mad2 up his mind.
