Editorial Notes.
While exploiting the San Juan Hill
charge, Teddy should not forget the
ice charge of the Trust.
With most of the people of this country, the retention of good times will
probably be the paramount issues this
fall.
If crowned heads continue to be
murdered at the rate they are nowadays, the time may come when the positions may go begging.
Probably the Colombian revolution
collapsed simply because the men who
were running it were not in earnest,
but were only keeping in practice until
the rest of the world quieted down a
bit. i
The British Journal mildly reprobate
Emperor William’s revenge address,
saying that massacre may be justified
afterwards but never before the fact.
There is a whole volume of British
character in that remark.
To prevent misunderstandings, we
may mention New Orlens, where mobs
of Boxers have been chasing -down and
murdering utterly inoffensive negroes
because one of their race committed a
bloody murder, is situated in the
United States and not in China.

They Should Register.
The indifference of voters as to registration continues to be a matter of surprise. There was deplorable apathy
before, but upon the promuigation of
the Supreme Court decision which
rendered nugatory the Stratton Primary law, even the desultory interest
that was taken fell off perceptibly. The
class of people not registered and
indifferent about it is the propertyowning and representative class, which
has more r-al ircentive to t-kea hand
in politics than any other. The man
who need not particularly concern
himself; to whom it matters no so very
much in a large way how things go, is
always registered. But the man who
has something at stake and should
Daturally be interested is often indifferent and will comprise the great
bulk of those who are left off the roll.
No Assassins Wanted Here.
We totally object to foreigners who
enjoy the hospitality of this country
and its protection as an asylum, operating from here as assassins of their
former potentates If they want to
kill somebody let them get from under
our cover and clear out, taking their
‘ohances. A governmenta! qiietus
might very properly be put upon all
the blatant anarchists who openly
meet and formulate and glory in such
crimes as the recent murder of Humbert of Italy.

Getting a Move On.
There is at last something definite as

going to Pekin, And they are going
to movetoday. No calculation seems
to have been made on the other forces,
and it is a good indication of AngloSaxon decision of character that they
do not wait on somebody else, but
proceed themselves to do the thing
which seems to be their duty.

A NARROW ESCAPE,
An Alarm of Fire Turned In From Box
No. 34 This Afternoon.
At quarter to three this afternoon
an alarm of fire was turned in from
box number 34, The firemen responded immediately but their services were
not needed. Frank Morgan discovered
ablaze in the yard belonging to the
Gogdair estate, near . Washington
schoolhouse, and after turning in the
alarm immediately went to work to put
out the fire. It was soon under control and was out by the time the firemeni arrived. The fire: caught in the
dry grass about the ceater of the yard
and was making rapid progress toward
the house inthe same lot, and burned
within two fest of it.

No Temporizing.
It was the good Americin way for
President McKinley to no longer dally
with Li Hung Chang over the situation. He demanded that the government of the United States be put in

promisses nor concession in the mat’er.
There was no temporizing or holding

WHICH WOULD BE MASTER?
If Mr. an were to be elected president it would be by grace of Boss Croker
and with the aid of Tammany hall.
Without New York Mr. Bryan can not
by any possibility be elected and he can
not by any possibility capture New
York without the aid of Tammany
and its boss. ,
Boss Croker has testified in open
court, or, to speak with more exactness,
committee, that he is in politics for
what he can make ont of it.
Mr. Bryan’s champions claim for him
the highest political ideals.. They regard him as a single minded patriot
who would scorn to do evil that good
might come of it.
Mr. Bryan and the unspeakable Boss
Croker have entered into political relations, the one with the other, and the
closeness of that relation may be inwire to Boss Croker at Kansas City the
friendly words: “My greetings to Tammanny on this anniversary of the nation’s birthday.” :
The crucial question is: ‘In the event
of Mr. Bryan's election to the presidency which influence will be paramount in the nation’s councils that of
Mr. Bryan, the untutored idealist, or
that of Mr. Croker, the grand sachem
