BakERSFIELD, Aug. 6 —Last night at 11:30 o’clock Jesse Cason, a switchman in the employ of the Santa Fe, while counting cars on the side tracks in ‘Kern City, near the tower, discovered the body of a woman lying on the track. This morning it was identified as that of Msud Raymond, a chambermaid, who resided in thie city. The head was completely severed from the body and was found lying on the south of the track, while the body was between the rails. The corpse was rembdved to Niederaus undertaking parlors, where _/an inquest-will be held this evening by Coroner Buckreus. The hour of the woman’s tragic death is not known, nor has it been learned how the tragedy occurred, as there were no known witnesses to the accident. Residents of Kern City whose homes are near the scene of the accident were questioned, but they were unable to throw any light on the case. It is said that the unfortunate woman was addicted to drink. a a Ob We have had stirring times in our history, and now we're trying a dose of striking times. San Franoisco, August 6—A large crowd witnessed the hauling of a new cable from the California Wire Works, near the foot of Bay streef, to the power house of the California-Street Railway Company at the corner of California and Hydestreets Sunday. The enormous coil weighs many tons, and heretofore it has been necessary to secure twenty or more horses, driven by experienced teamsters, to haul the big coil. That was impossible this ‘time, on account of the strike, and for awhile it was thought that the hauling of the big coil would bave to be suspended until the strike was ended. Then it occurred to Superintendent Harris to employ an automobile. One was secured from Stockton that “walked off’ with the cable without trouble and returned to Stockton Monday evening. Question Answered. Yes, August Flower still has the largest sale of any medicine in the civilized world. Your mothers’ and grandmothers’ never thought of using anything else for Indiestion or Biliousness. Doctors were scarce, and they seldom heard of Appendicitis, Nervous Prostration or Heart failure, etc. They used August Flower to clean out the system and stop fermentation of undigested food, regulate the action of the liver, stimulate the nervous aud organic action of the system, and that is all they took when feeling dull and bad with -headaches or other aches. You only need a few doses of Green’s August Flower, in liquoid form, to make you satisflei there is nothing serious the matter with you. Get Green’s Prize Almanac. There is nothing in the world more delightfal than a drink of good whiskey —and Jesse Moore is good whiskey. Arrested and Set Free. Dr. J. H. Hanaford says in the W esttern Plowman: Ifthe first cough is properly treated, the first/ step in the direction of consumption arrested, the lungs developed, the breath set free, we need not fear consumption.” Kemp’s Balsum for the throat and lungs is the proper treatment for the first cough. No other remedy has saved so many from consumption. Large bottles 25c and 50c. For sale by H. Dickerman, sole agent. ‘Cheap Whine in France. San .Franoisco, August 6—Representatives of Oalifornia viticultural interests have learned that French ex porters propose to enter into active competition with the wine makers of this State. It is asserted that in the Perigord district of France the crop of grapes has been so enormous that wine has fallen to less than one cents gallon. The French growers, accord— ing to the Chronicle, do not intend shipping wine to this country, owing to the tariff, but they propose to send over condensed must. This is unfermented juice of the grape, which can be quickly converted into fair wine by the addition of water. The duty on must is only 20 per cent. ad valorem, it coming under the head of “unenumerated articles” in the tariff schedules. The wine interests of California will at once take steps to hive the omission ofmust from the tariff rectified by Congress, and it is likely that the measure to that effect will be placed in charge of. Representative Kabn on his return fromthe Philippines. _2@e the Postoffice Department does save all the money it hopes to by the reform in second class rates, it should expend it in increasing rural free delivery rather than in starting one cent postage. We can get along without the latter for awhile yet, but the former is rapidly becoming indispensable. The Fosburg case was a good sample of the way in which policemen sometimes seek to cover up their own inefficiency. Now that young Fosburg —who ought never to have been tried— has been acquitted, the raal murderers have escaped. eee The West, it is hoped, will realize the injurious effects of cutting down its forests. Secretary Wilson, while’ he will not say that this has caused the hot wave, does say positively that it facilitated its spread. There is no doubt that trees condense the moisture of the air and let it drip on the ground beneath, thus diminishing the humidity that makes so many days of our summers 80 unbearable.
