New York, August 7—OCommenting
upon the naval maneuvers in which the
attacking squadron supposed to represent “the enemy” ‘has: just been declared victor, the Tribune’s London
correspondent says: There has been
more realism in these maneuvers than
the Admiralty authorities had expected. Not only have the two torpedo
boat destroyers been lost, but it is reported that several others have been
crippled. The wreck of the Viper was,
of course, the most serious accident of
the maneuvers. This vessel was an experiment, and her performances were
being witnessed with a critical eye by
the Admirality experts. The destroyer
Violet is said to be in a bad way.
Nearly all her tube boilers have been
disabled through split tubes, and it
was only by great presence of mind
and prompt action that the atokers
were saved from being scalded to death.
There are rumors of incidents of a
similar nature on other vessels, about
which there will probably be a fall
inquiry.

Denver, August 6—George E: Gibb,
chief clerk for the general manager of
the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company,
killed himself today in the office of
the company, in the Boston block, by
shooting himself through the head.
It is supposed that ill health, from
which he had been suffering for several months, had affected his mind.
Shooting at Chico.
imselt,
Ounico, August 6—Last night J. F.
Barnes, a barber of this city, shot Bert
Cofer, a milk wagon driver, in the}.
back of the neck, the ball passing out
of the right cheek. Cofer is in a
precarious condition. Barnes is in
jail, with bail fixed at $2000. Both men
were drinking when the trouble which
led to the shooting occurred. Barnes’
reputation is bad and for a time there
was strong talk of lynching.

Old Receiving Ship.
~New Yorx, August 6—According to
the Tribune, fhe latest proposition
concerning the old receiving ship Vermont, which comes as a result of a
number of protests to the Navy Department against the conversion on
sanitary grounds of the old boat into
junk, ie to establish a Naval Museum,
or trophy-room, the claim being made
that some of the most valuable war
relics are exposed to the open air,
absolutely unprotected from the
weather. The room now used as a
museum is small, and it is needed for
offices.
